The Wright State baseball team clinched the Horizon League regular-season title Friday afternoon with a sweep of UIC at Nischwitz Stadium, holding on for a 5-4 win in the first game before taking the second game 9-4.
The Flames opened the scoring with a run in the second, only to see the Raiders answer in the bottom of the frame as Sean Murphy smacked his fifth home run of the season, a solo shot to left center.
UIC again went in front 2-1 in the third before Peyton Burdick tied it in the fourth with his fourth homer of the year to left center. WSU added another run in the inning to take its first lead of the day as Murphy singled, stole second and scored as JD Orr had a hit through the left side of the infield.
The Flames responded by tying the game at 3-3 with a run in the fifth and it stayed that way until Wright State went ahead for good in the seventh. After Matt Morrow walked and Mitch Roman was hit by a pitch to start the frame, Ryan Fucci knocked in Morrow with a one-out single to center. Murphy was intentionally walked to load the bases and Gabe Snyder followed with a hit through the right side to plate Roman and make it 5-3.
UIC tallied an unearned run in the eighth, but Zane Collins was able to retire the Flames in order in the ninth for his first career save. Jesse Scholtens (9-1) pitched the first seven innings, allowed just one earned run while striking out seven.
At the plate, Orr was a perfect three-for-three with Fucci had two hits and Murphy two hits and two runs scored.
In the second game, UIC again took the early lead with a run in the first, but a two-run Fucci home run to left in the bottom of the first, his ninth of the year, followed by a John Brodner RBI double and Morrow RBI single in the second gave the Raiders a 4-1 advantage.
The Flames tied it with three runs in the third, only to see WSU answer with three of its own in the bottom of the inning, two coming on a Snyder hit, to go in front for good. Wright State added another in the fourth and one more in the fifth to round out the scoring.
E.J. Trapino (3-1) came on in relief in the fourth and pitched four shutout innings to pick up the win, striking out three. Logan Blair shutout UIC over the final two innings.
Offensively, Morrow and Snyder had two hits and two RBI, Fucci two RBI and two runs scored, Brodner two hits and two runs scored and Burdick scored twice.
With the two wins, WSU clinched the Horizon League regular-season title, its first since 2014, which also allows the Raiders to host the league tournament May 25-28.
Wright State (37-13, 20-4 Horizon) hosts another league doubleheader on Saturday as the Raiders take on Milwaukee at noon. WSU will recognize its eight seniors--Blair, Brodner, Jacob Burk, Jason DeFevers, Fucci, Scholtens, Trapino and Jack Van Horn--following the conclusion of the second game.
