UDM extended the margin to 40-32 on a Rosanna Reynolds three midway through the second stanza, only to see WSU answer with seven straight points, four coming from Lexi Smith. The Titans, though, tallied the final two points of the half to hold a 42-39 edge at the break.
Detroit Mercy shot 57 percent altogether in the opening 20 minutes, including six of 12 from behind the arc, compared to 38 percent for Wright State, who was just one of seven from three-point range. The Raiders, however, were 10 of 12 at the foul line while the Titans were four for four.
A Mackenzie Taylor three followed by a Smith layup gave WSU the lead at 51-50 at the 4:07 mark of the third period and after UDM went back in front with a three, the Raiders closed the quarter with a 9-2 run to go in front for good, the final seven by Welch.
Nicole Urbanick cut the deficit to 66-64 on a three with 4:52 left, but Detroit Mercy would get no closer as Wright State hit nine of 12 foul shots in the quarter to seal the victory.
The win was the seventh straight for the Raiders, tying the 2004-05 squad for the longest streak in WSU's 30-year Division I history. The longest winning streak ever for the program is 13, set in 1986-87, the final season in Division II.
Wright State shot 40 percent overall, despite hitting just three of 18 from three-point range, while the Titans shot 47 percent, but were eight of 26 from behind the arc, four for 19 after the first quarter.
The Raiders also made 20 of 25 foul shots compared to seven of 10 for Detroit Mercy and led in rebounds (44-28), points in the paint (36-24), points off of turnovers (17-10) and second-chance points (10-2).
Welch led all scorers with a career-high 33 ponts, eclipsing the 25 she had at Green Bay on December 31. The junior guard was 11 of 18 from the field, 11 of 12 at the foul line and added six rebounds.
Taylor added 16 points for the Raiders while two others posted double-doubles in Smith (12 points, 10 rebounds) and Emily Vogelpohl (10 points, 12 boards). Symone Simmons also had 12 rebounds.
Wright State (16-5, 8-1 Horizon), winners of 12 of its last 13, continues the five-game homestand on Sunday, January 29, with a 2:00 contest against Oakland.
