Women Set Winning Streak Record in Decision Over Oakland

The Wright State women's basketball team jumped out to a 25-14 lead after a quarter and went on to an 84-66 Horizon League victory over Oakland Sunday afternoon at the Wright State Nutter Center, setting a Division I program record with its eighth straight win in the process.

The Golden Grizzlies opened the scoring with a three-pointer, but that turned out to be the only lead of the day for Oakland as Mackenzie Taylor answered with a three and two foul shots and Lexi Smith had a basket to give the Raiders a 7-3 advantage.

WSU finished with 25 points overall in the period, hitting nine of 17 shots, including two of three three-pointers, and also making all five foul shot attempts.

The Golden Grizzlies cut the deficit to nine twice in the second quarter, only to see Wright State close the half with an 18-6 run, eight of those coming from Smith, to build a 46-25 halftime lead.

The Raiders shot 43 percent from the field in the opening 20 minutes and made 14 of 16 free throws while Oakland shot 33 percent and was just three of six at the stripe.

WSU took its biggest lead of the game at 49-25 as Chelsea Welch converted a three-point play to start the third stanza, but the Golden Grizzlies followed with a 24-9 run over the next seven minutes to close to within nine at 58-49.

Oakland only trailed 65-58 on a Sha'Keya three early in the fourth quarter before the Raiders put the game out of reach with a 19-2 run, eight of those from Welch.

Wright State shot 41 percent for the game and was 21 of 24 at the foul line while the Golden Grizzlies shot 38 percent and made 10 of 18 free throws.  WSU also led in points in the paint (44-32), points off of turnovers (24-13) and second-chance points (21-14).

Welch led all scorers with 24 points for the Raiders while Smith posted a double-double of 20 points and 11 rebounds.  Taylor added 15 points, Emily Vogelpohl 14 and Symone Simmons chipped in 12 rebounds.

The win was the eighth straight for WSU, eclipsing the previous Division I record of seven set during the 1987-88 and 2004-05 seasons.  The school record is 13, set in the program's final Division II campaign in 1986-87.

Wright State (17-5, 9-1 Horizon), winners of 13 of its last 14, continues the five-game homestand on Saturday, February 4, with a 4:30 contest against Northern Kentucky.
