The #25-ranked Wright State baseball team rallied to tie the game with three runs in the fifth, only to see #4 South Carolina score the winning run in the seventh as the Gamecocks defeated the Raiders 4-3 in the opening game of the weekend series Friday night at Founders Park.
South Carolina scored a quick two runs in the bottom of the first and the Gamecocks added another run in the fourth to go up 3-0.
WSU, however, would rally to tie the game in the fifth. With one out, Brandon Giltrow reached on an error and after Matt Morrow singled up the middle, a Zach Weatherford grounder put two runners into scoring position. A wild pitch allowed Giltrow to score the first run and following JD Orr being hit by a pitch, Gabe Snyder had an infield hit to plate Morrow and make it 3-2.
Alex Alders was hit by a pitch to load the bases and Adrian Marquez forced in a run as he was also hit by a pitch to tie the game.
It stayed that way until the bottom of the seventh when South Carolina tallied a run with two outs to go up for good.
Morrow finished with two hits to pace the Raider offense while on the mound, Trevor Swaney pitched 2.1 innings of scoreless relief, giving up just two hits.
Wright State (2-2) and South Carolina (4-2) continue the series with a single game Saturday starting at 4:00.
