The Wright State baseball team posted its third win over a ranked opponent this season Sunday afternoon by defeating #4 South Carolina 5-1 at Founders Park.
The Gamecocks opened the scoring with an unearned run in the second, but that turned out to be the final run of the game for South Carolina as Raider starter Danny Sexton (2-0) scattered six hits and two walks over seven innings of work while striking out four.
WSU went in front to stay with a pair of runs in the third. With two outs and no one on base, Kevin Whatley walked and Matt Morrow followed with a two-run home run to right, his first of the season.
Wright State tacked on another run in the fifth as Morrow reached on an error, plating Seth Gray. The Raiders then added two insurance runs in the eighth on RBI singles by Morrow and Zach Weatherford.
Following Sexton's seven strong innings, Jeremy Randolph and Derek Hendrixson each threw a scoreless frame to close out the game, with Hendrixson striking out three.
It was WSU's third win this season over a ranked opponent as the Raiders took two of three at #10 Clemson last weekend to open the campaign.
Morrow finished with two hits and four RBI on the day while Gray had two hits and scored twice, Whatley two runs scored and Weatherford two hits.
Wright State (3-3) stays in the Carolinas all week for Spring Break, starting with a two-game set at Gardner-Webb on Tuesday and Wednesday, with both starting at 5:00.
