The Wright State baseball team split a Horizon League doubleheader with Oakland Saturday at Nischwitz Stadium, with the Golden Grizzlies taking the opener 5-4 in 10 innings before the Raiders rallied for a 7-5 win in the nightcap.
Oakland grabbed an early 2-0 lead in the first game with a pair of runs in the first inning, only to see WSU tie the game in the bottom of the fourth. With one out, an Adrian Marquez walk, a Gabe Snyder hit by a pitch and a Seth Gray hit to left loaded the bases for JD Orr, who walked to force in a run. Alex Alders followed with a sacrifice fly to center to plate Snyder and make it 2-2.
Wright State went in front in the fifth as Matt Morrow tripled to right center and came in on a Zach Weatherford single, but OU answered with a run in the sixth and went up 4-3 with another in the seventh.
Back came the Raiders in the bottom of the seventh on a Gray single to knock in Marquez and it stayed that way until the 10th, when Oakland's Matt DiLeo went the opposite way to right for a game-winning solo home run.
Morrow, Weatherford, Gray and Brandon Giltrow each had two hits in the first game, with Marquez scoring twice.
In the second game, it was WSU that took the early lead with a run in the first as Morrow led off with a solo home run to right, his third of the season. Wright State then added two more in the second on a Giltrow RBI single and a Morrow sacrifice fly.
DiLeo cut the deficit to 3-2 with a two-run single in the fourth and the margin was still one at 4-3 after six as Gray had a sacrifice fly in the fifth and Zach Sterry led off the Golden Grizzly sixth with a solo home run.
Oakland went in front with two in the top of the eighth, but its lead was short lived as the Raiders rallied with three in the bottom of the frame. After Alders and Weatherford started the inning with a double and walk, respectively, pinch-hitter Cory Heffron singled to left center to drive in Alders and Morrow followed by reaching on a fielder's choice as Weatherford scored. Morrow then stole second and came in on Orr's single to center.
Orr finished with three hits in the nightcap while Morrow had two along with three RBI and three runs scored. Weatherford scored twice.
Wright State (26-11, 12-2 Horizon) plays another leageu doubleheader on Sunday, April 23, this time at Valparaiso with the first game starting at 1:00 Eastern time.
