The Wright State baseball team held off a ninth-inning rally by Northern Kentucky to defeat the Norse 5-3 in the second game of their Horizon League series Saturday afternoon at the Bill Aker Complex.
The Raiders opened the scoring with three runs in the third. Kevin Whatley and Brandon Giltrow started the frame with singles and Whatley advanced to third on a Matt Morrow line out to right. A force out off the bat of JD Orr drove in Whatley with the first run and after Orr stole second, he came in on an Adrian Marquez hit to center. Gabe Snyder plated Marquez with the third and final run on a double to right.
WSU added two more in the sixth to extend the margin to 5-0. With two outs and nobody on, Alex Alders walked, Whatley had an infield hit and after both runners stole a base, both scored as Giltrow reached on an error.
Starter Ryan Weiss (5-0) pitched an impressive seven shutout innings, scattering seven hits and a walk while striking out a season-high 10. Trevor Swaney followed with a scoreless eighth.
In the ninth, Northern Kentucky scored three times with two outs, but would get no closer.
Offensively for the Raiders, Marquez, Snyder and Whatley each had two hits, with Whatley scoring twice.
Wright State (29-12, 15-3 Horizon) goes for the series sweep in the finale Sunday at noon.
