Raiders Host Samaritan's Feet Night at 7 pm
The Wright State men's basketball team will begin conference play at the Nutter Center on Friday night as they face UIC at 7 p.m. in a nationally-televised tilt (ESPN2). The Raiders are attempting to make back-to-back NCAA tournament appearances following their Horizon League conference tournament championship in March. The first 1,000 fans will receive a Scott Nagy bobblehead.
Wright State
The Raiders, 6-7, open league play following a difficult non-conference slate that saw them drop five games by seven points or less. WSU is coming off one of those near-misses, losing to #17 Mississippi State 67-63 on Dec. 22. Bill Wampler led the way with 19 points as Mark Hughes and Parker Ernsthausen each ended with 11 points. Wampler leads the Raiders with a 15.0 average while Loudon Love, who missed the MSU game due to an ankle injury, sits at 14.0 points and 8.8 rebounds per game.
Wright State leads the overall series 31-27 after winning the last five encounters. WSU won both games last year, 88-81 to end the regular season in Chicago and 65-61 at the Nutter Center to open Horizon League on December 28. In the most recent meeting, Love finished with 23 points, 15 rebounds and five assists.
UIC
The Flames also hold a 6-7 record heading into the game. They own an impressive 71-70 victory over Bradley, who won the Cancun Challenge in late November. Marcus Ottey (15.8 ppg) leads a trio of players averaging at least 15 points a game. Ottey, a junior, scored his 1000th point in a December 17 game against Incarnate Word. Junior guard Tarkus Ferguson averages 15.7 and a team-leading 6.2 rebounds per game. He recorded the program's first triple-double against a D-I opponent earlier this season. Sharp-shooter Godwin Boahen, chosen as the League's Sixth Man after last season, comes in averaging 15.1 ppg. Illinois-Chicago is riding a two-game winning streak with wins over Incarnate Word 63-57 and St. Francis (IL) 76-55 at home last week.
UIC was picked third in the preseason Horizon League team. Ottey was selected to the preseason first team while Ferguson was named to the second team. UIC finished last season at 20-16, advancing to the finals of the Collegeinsider.com (CIT) Tournament. They're looking for their first road victory of the year.
Samaritan's Feet
WSU head coach Scott Nagy and his staff will coach the game barefoot to help draw awareness to Samaritan's Feet. The humanitarian aid organization was founded in 2003. Since that time, nearly 6.9 million pairs of shoes have been distributed in 108 countries and in 385 U.S. cities across 41 states. The coaching staff and players will devote time on Saturday morning by serving at a local shoes distribution. Fans can show their support by bringing a new pair of shoes to gates 3 or 9, or by making a donation by clicking here.
