Women's Basketball Falls in Finals

The Wright State women's basketball team played #22 Green Bay for the Little Caesars Horizon League Championship Tuesday afternoon, falling 62-44.

The Raiders were led by senior Chelsea Welch's 13 points and six steals while fellow senior Lexi Smith who finished with 14 points.  WSU cut the led to 11 points late in the third quarter but the Phoenix went onto lead by as much as 22 points late in the game.  Welch and Mackenzie Taylor were named to the all-tournament team.

Wright State is now 23-10 while Green Bay goes to 29-3 and awaits their NCAA Tournament bid announcement.

GAME SUMMARY

First Half Highlights
  • The Raiders jumped out to a 2-0 lead but fell behind at the end of the first quarter 18-8 as Welch had four points.
  • Wright State went to the locker room down 38-21 as Welch had 11 points, including seven from the line.
  • Junior Emily Vogelpohl and freshman Tyler Frierson each had six rebounds for the Raiders.
  • Lexi Smith added five points.
Second Half Highlights
  • Wright State cut the lead to 11 during the third quarter but Green Bay led 49-36 at the buzzer, outscoring the Phoenix 15-11.
  • Green Bay hit three of their six threes in the fourth quarter.
FACTS AND FIGURES
  • Green Bay used the paint to outscore the Raiders 32-22 and second chance points 18-11.
  • WSU shot 28% from the field and connected on just one three pointer by Mackenzie Taylor.
  • The Phoenix outrebounded the Raiders 49-34 as Frierson came off the bench to lead WSU with eight boards.
  • Each team had 13 turnovers and WSU created eight steals.
