@WSUVBall Opens Horizon League Play

The Wright State volleyball team opened the Horizon League schedule Friday night with a close 3-1 loss to Milwaukee at home by scores of 25-23, 25-23, 23-25 and 25-20.  Wright State falls to 8-5, 0-1 while the Panthers are 2-12, 1-0.

Alannah Lemming and Celia Powers led the Raiders with 12 kills each as Teddie Sauer added 10 more as freshman Lainey Stephenson posted 43 assists and 11 digs.  Jenna Story ended with 19 digs with Hannah Colvin collected 13.  Taylor Gibson finished with nine kills.  WSU had 24 blocks with Sauer accounting for seven.

First Set
The initial set was just the first in close decisions as Milwaukee's largest lead was three at 22-19 with the Panthers winning 25-23.  Lemmings, Powers and Sauer kept the Raiders tight with four kills each as Stephenson registered 12 assists and Colvin had five digs.  The Panthers hit .273 with 16 kills overall.

Second Set
The Panthers took a 12-7 until the Raider stormed back to lead 17-16.  Though WSU tied it at 22-22 and 23-23, Milwaukee won the set 25-23.  Gibson led the way with four kills as Stephenson and Powers each had three.  Story put up six digs as Stephenson booked 11 assists.  The Raiders hit their match-high .286 with 15 overall kills.  UWM hit .278 overall.

Third Set
WSU was down 10-6 early but came back for a 17-15 lead.  The teams went back and forth, and Milwaukee led 23-21 before WSU reeled off four straight to secure the win 25-23.  Wright State had 13 kills, three from Gibson, and 19 digs overall.  Story had five digs and Stephenson continued her solid play at setter with 11 assists. 

Fourth Set
Milwaukee went up 15-7, but the Raider closed the lead to just three at 22-19 as UWM held on to win 25-20.  Lemming, Powers and Sauer each posted three kills as WSU had 12 overall.  Story and Colvin each had four digs, Sauer had four blocks and Stephenson finished with nine assists.

What Coach Matters is Saying
"I thought it was really competitive, but we didn't do things well that we are good at such as blocking and digs.  We had some first Horizon League jitters that are out of our system now."

Next Up
The Raiders will host UIC Saturday at 4 pm.  The Flames are 8-6, 1-0 after winning at IUPUI 3-1 Friday night.  WSU men's soccer will host Cleveland State at 2 pm and the women's soccer team will host Green Bay at 7 pm.
