@WSU_MBB Posts Comeback Win at YSU

Raiders Win 80-74

The Wright State men's basketball team was down seven points at half and came back to win 80-74 at Youngstown State Thursday night.  WSU is now 9-10, 3-3 while the Penguins drop to 6-14, 2-5.

WSU was perfect from the free throw line at 18 of 18 for WSU's most ever while shooting 100% at the stripe.  Malachi Smith collected his career-highs of 17 points and nine rebounds as Bill Wampler also ended with 17 points.  Youngstown-area native Mark Hughes finished with 16 points, and Loudon Love had 15 points with seven boards.  Wright State shot 45% and outrebounded YSU 31-29.

First Half
The Raiders used five points from Love to grab an early lead of 11-9 by the first media timeout.  YSU came back outscoring WSU 7-5 to tie the game at 16 at 11:23.  The Penguins shot their way to a lead 26-21 at the eight-minute mark.  A Hughes three and a Love layup cut into the lead followed by Wampler three for the advantage, but YSU was up by the final media timeout 32-31.  Youngstown State went to the locker room up 45-38 as they scored 21 points off seven threes.  Hughes led the Raiders with 10 points and Love with nine points/four rebounds.  Wampler, Smith and Parker Ernsthausen each had five points.

Second Half
The Raiders started the half with a layup by Ernsthausen but YSU came back and led by as much as eight, up 50-45 at the first break.  A 5-0 Raider run caused a YSU timeout with 14 minutes left.  Out of the timeout, Cole Gentry connected for a Raider advantage.  The score bounced back and forth until the halfway point with YSU up 60-58. At the under four timeout, the Raiders led 70-69.  WSU continued to go up five points on a pair of free throws and a layup by Love with about two minutes left.  Free throws down the stretch by Gentry and Smith sealed the win.

Nagy Says
"It was the first time I really had to raise my voice at halftime.  We were more physical, and they responded well.  We were fortunate to win after the way we played in the first half.  How phenomenal was Malachi as our leading rebounder and scorer?  When he got the chance, he showed how he can play.  It's important to have others step up when we need them."

Next Up
The Raiders head to play at Cleveland State Saturday.  The game time was moved to 1 pm due to weather concerns.  The Vikings are 5-15, 0-7 after a 91-76 loss to Northern Kentucky.
