Raiders winning streak ends in Chicago

The Wright State volleyball team's nation-leading 16-game winning streak ended in Chicago on Friday night as the Raiders fell 3-0 at UIC in Horizon League action.

The Raiders are now 16-2 overall and 5-1 in conference play as they suffered their first HL loss. Friday's loss was the first in 42 days as the winning streak stretched across parts of three months. Wright State swept 10 of the 16 matches over that span, with Friday's loss their first three-set loss of the season and first since November 4 of last year.
 
Wright State tallied 42 kills on Friday night aganst UIC, led by Celia Powers' 10. Teddie Sauer added nine kills of her own while Megan Alders contributed eight. Lainey Stephenson led the match with 33 assists and picked up eight digs. The Raider defense finished with 57 digs, one less than UIC. Jenna Story had a match-high 20 digs, followed by Ellee Ruskaup with 11 digs. Wright Stated finished with three aces, as Powers contributed two and Story added one.
 
 
Set 1
The points went back and forth to start the set and was tied at 5-5 until the Raiders went on a four-point run to take the lead at 9-5. Taylor Gibson added two kills back-to-back to put Wright State at 15 points. Powers added a kill and Story served an ace to extend the Raiders advantage but the Flames were able to go on runs of points in the last half of the set to shorten their deficit to two points at 21-19. Wright State attempted to hold the lead, but the Flames fought back to win the set 25-23.
 
Set 2
Wright State started the set with a 3-1 lead as UIC called its first timeout down by five points at 7-2. The Flames picked up a few more points to shorten their deficit to three points. Gibson threw a tip to the Flames deep corner for the Raiders to reach 10 points before the Flames tied the score for the first time at 11-11. The points went back and forth between the teams and UIC took a three-point lead at 16-13. Mallory Ladd tipped a smart ball over for the Raiders to reach 18 points to shorten their deficit to one point. The Flames reached the red zone first, but Powers knocked down a kill for Wright State to reach point 20. UIC called its second timeout with the set tied 21-21 before the teams went back and forth through the red zone and UIC reached set point first. The Flames won the second set 25-23.
 
Set 3
The score went back and forth early in the set as Wright State took the lead at 7-4 after a three-point run. The Raiders extended the lead to 10-5 before Alders added a kill to stop the Flames' three-point run as the score reached 12-9. Powers added two kills in a row to give the Raiders 15 points and Stephenson put up a solo block for Wright State to extend the lead to five points. Two straight blocks and a kill from UIC shortened the deficit to two points. UIC made a run in the last half of the set as the kills went back and forth in the red zone and the Flames came out on top winning 25-23.

The Raiders are back in action next Friday night as they continue a stretch of five consecutive road matches with a trip to take on Green Bay.
