Raiders run streak to 14 with five set thriller

The Wright State volleyball team fought hard to extend the nation's longest winning streak to 14 games on Friday night, rallying from behind to defeat Northern Kentucky in five sets in Horizon League action. After dropping the first two sets (21-25 and 20-25) the Raiders responded with three consecutive set wins by scores of 25-22, 27-25 and 15-11. 

The Raiders return home on Saturday afternoon for a 4 p.m. matchup with IUPUI as conference play continues and they look for their 15th consecutive victory.
 
The Norse took control of the first two sets, but after the fourth set Wright State's determination won the match. The two teams finished the match with 68 kills each but the Raiders had the higher hitting percentage at .233. The Raiders had five players finish with double digit kills, lead by Megan Alders' 14 kills with a .293 hitting percentage. Nyssa Baker followed with 13 kills, hitting .414 after only committing one error. Taylor Gibson knocked down 12 kills, Celia Powers had 11 and Teddie Sauer added 10 kills.
 
The Raiders defense finished with 115 digs, led by Jenna Story's 33 digs and to go along with her seven assists. Lainey Stephenson picked up 25 digs, led the match with 50 assists and also contributed six kills. Ellee Ruskaup contributed 18 digs and Hannah Colvin added 16 digs. Wright State's front line of defense finished the match with 14 blocks, with contributions made from Powers, Sauer and Baker.
 
 
Set 1
The points went back and forth to start the set before the Norse went on a three-point run to take the lead. A kill from Sauer gave the Raiders 14 points and pull within one. The Norse reached the red zone on a Wright State service error to put the Raiders down by four points. Alders knocked down a kill for the score to reach 23-19 as Wright State fought to catch up, only to see the Norse win the set 25-21.

Set 2
The Raiders opened with a kill from Baker, but Northern Kentucky answered back and went on a three-point run. Wright State called timeout as the score reached 7-3. The Raiders offense struggled to find open court on the Norse side. Gibson was able to knock a kill down to give the Raiders eight points as they trailed by two. Sauer and Gibson powered down back-to-back kills to pull the score to 19-16 as the Raiders attempted to cut into the deficit but they were unable to make up the hole as the Norse won the set 25-20.
 
Set 3
Wright State started the set off with a three-point run and jumped out to an early 9-4 lead. Sauer added a kill for the Raiders as they reached 10 points, before the Norse shortened the deficit to one point and then the teams tied at 18-18. The teams went point for point into the red zone, until the Raiders knocked down two kills to win 25-22 to stay alive.
 
Set 4
Baker opened the set with a kill and the Raiders took a quick 5-2 advantage. Northern Kentucky fought back to tie the game at 8-8 and then went on a two-point run to take the lead. There was fight from both teams as it went point for point until the Raiders took a five point lead at 18-13. Powers added two aces to the extend the Raiders lead and then powered down back-to-back kills to push the hosts to 23 points. Northern Kentucky fought back to tie the game at 23-23 and then each team went on to have a chance at set point before Wright State finished on top winning 27-25.
 
Set 5
Each team came out strong as it went point for point to start, but the Raiders offensive determination showed with three kills in a row. The score tied at 4-4 and then Northern Kentucky took the lead by two points. Wright State answered with a five-point run to take the lead back as the score reached 9-6. Sauer added a kill for the Raiders to reach 10 points and take a three point lead. Northern Kentucky tied the score at 11-11 but Wright State went on to win the match 15-11.
