Raiders down Green Bay, sweep weekend matchups

The Wright State volleyball team defeated reigning Horizon League champion Green Bay 3-1 on Saturday afternoon, dropping the first set before rolling off three consecutive set victories. The win gives the Raiders a 20-4 overall record and a 9-3 mark in Horizon League play while improving them to 10-0 at home inside McLin Gym. 

With Friday night's victory over Milwaukee and Saturday's win against Green Bay, the Raiders now sit in a tie for second in the HL standings with the Phoenix at 9-3, one game back of Milwaukee at 10-2. Wright State and the remainder of the HL have four regular season matchups remaining. The Raiders go on the road to face Cleveland State on Wednesday night before returning home for the final time in the 2019 regular season on Friday night against UIC on Senior Night.

On Saturday afternoon, the Raiders led the match with 58 kills, 88 digs, 55 assists and eight blocks as a team. Taylor Gibson and Nyssa Baker led Wright State's offense with 13 kills each. Baker committed zero errors off 28 attempts which made for a match-high .464 hitting percentage. Teddie Sauer added 10 kills, Celia Powers knocked down eight kills and Megan Alders contributed seven for the match. Jenna Story tallied a match-high 25 digs, with Powers following right behind her with 20 digs and Hannah Colvin adding 13 digs. Lainey Stephenson led the match with 48 assists.

"Playing in McLin has always been a huge advantage for us. We have dominated in this gym and have come back from great deficits. This team and our fans together have built an atmosphere that brings the best out of us. We knew being at home gave us an edge as we took on the top two teams in conference. Both matches were a total team effort and executed our game plan."
 
Set 1
Green Bay came out leading the Raiders 5-2 but Wright State made a comeback to tie the score at 7-7. The points went back and forth before the Raiders went on four-point run to take the advantage at 17-13. Baker knocked down a kill for the Raiders to reach the red zone leading by four points. Green Bay fought back to overcome the deficit and tie the score at 21-21. The Phoenix reached set point first but the Raiders tied it up at 24-24, with Green Bay going on to win the set 26-24.
 
Set 2
The Raiders started the set off with a 4-1 deficit but fought back to tie the Phoenix at 7-7. The two teams fought back and forth, with Powers and Baker knocking down a kill each to tie the score at 10-10. Gibson powered down a kill to put the Raiders at 15 points. Wright State was able to go on a four-point run to extend their advantage at 18-14. Powers knocked down a kill for the Raiders to reach the red zone leading by four points. Mallory Ladd had back-to-back kills to give Wright State set point at 24-19. Sauer ended the set with a kill as the Raiders won the set 25-20.
 
Set 3
The Raiders went on an early five-point run to take a 7-2 lead, as Powers knocked down a kill for Wright State to reach 10 points. Wright State led by four points at 16-12 and prompted a Green Bay timeout. The Phoenix earned a point after their timeout but Gibson answered with a kill. The Raiders reached the red zone off Green Bay's attack error leading by five points. Wright State went on a five-point run in the red zone to win the set 25-16.
 
Set 4
The Phoenix started the set off with an early 3-1 lead, but the Raiders were able to fight back and tie the score at 5-5. Wright State then went on a four-point run to take the advantage over Green Bay at 9-5. The Raiders reached 15 points on a kill from Baker and Sauer knocked down a kill, followed by Alders adding two kills to put the Raiders in the red zone. Wright State was six points ahead of Green Bay when they reached point 20. Baker ended the set knocking down a kill for the Raiders to win 25-17.
