Wright State earned an 85-62 win against Southern last Thursday night behind career nights from James Manns and Grant Basile. Manns and Basile combined for 49 of the Raiders' 85 points, as four different players finished with double-digit scoring nights for Wright State. Manns finished with 26 points on 10-of-16 shooting from the floor, adding eight rebounds, while Basile tallied 23 points on 8-of-10 shooting from the floor with seven rebounds of his own.
INTO THE VALLEY
Mississippi Valley State enters Tuesday's game 0-9 and is coming off of a 79-67 loss at Miami (OH) on Sunday afternoon. The Devils did defeat North American University on Nov. 30 (124-70) in their lone home game of the season, but North American is considered a non-countable opponent as they currently apply for NAIA status in its fifth total season.
THE DEVIL'S IN THE DETAILS
Mississippi Valley State has played countable opponents from seven different conferences this season entering Tuesday night, with Wright State and the Horizon League becoming the eighth. The Devils have played in eight states over the first month and a half of the season. Mississippi Valley has played three teams from the MAC (Central Michigan, Western Michigan, Miami (OH)), and one school from each of the following conferences: Big 12 (Iowa State), Pac12 (Utah), CUSA (Louisiana Tech), Summit League (South Dakota State), Atlantic Sun (North Alabama) and The Valley (Missouri State).
Mississippi Valley State's 143-49 loss at Utah (Nov. 8) set the NCAA record for the largest scoring margin against a Division I opponent since the NCAA tournament was introduced in the 1938-39 season. The 94-point win surpassed the previous margin-of-victory mark of 91, set by Tulsa against Prairie View in December 1995.
Head coach Lindsey Hunter is in his first season at the helm of Mississippi Valley State. Hunter was the 10th pick overall in the 1993 NBA Draft by the Detroit Pistons after concluding his college career at Jackson State. He played in 937 games with five teams over his NBA career and 147 playoff games as he reached the postseason in 12 of his seasons. During his 17-year NBA career, Hunter recorded 7,956 points, 2,021 rebounds, and 2,506 assists. He won two NBA championships (Lakers 2001-02, Pistons 2003-04).
NOT THE SAME MANNS
Sophomore James Manns has turned in back-to-back career games off the bench for the Raiders, scoring 13 points with four rebounds in 12 minutes against Indiana State before a 26-point, eight rebound night against Southern in 21 minutes of action. Against Southern, Manns went 10-of-16 from the floor and was a perfect 6-of-6 from the free throw stripe. Prior to the last two games, Manns' career-bests were eight points (accomplished twice), three rebounds and eight minutes of action (done three times).
BASILE STEPPING UP
Since being inserted in the starting lineup on Nov. 27, freshman forward Grant Basile is averaging 13.3 points/game and 9.7 rebounds/game over the four-game stretch, scoring double figures in all four. His 13.3 points/game average is just behind Bill Wampler's 13.7 points/game average for the team lead over the same period, while leading the Raiders in rebounding. His 29.3 minutes/game is the third-most on the Wright State roster over the last four games. Basile has tallied a pair of double-doubles during the stretch thanks to a 17-point, 12 rebound performance against Miami (OH) and a 12-point, 10 rebound stat line against Western Kentucky.
