@WSU_MBB Rallies to Post Win over NKU; Wampler Scores 29

Raiders were down 16 and came back to win 81-77

Down 16 points late in the first half, the Wright State men's basketball team came back to defeat Northern Kentucky 81-77 late Friday night at the WSU Nutter Center.  The win put the Raiders in a tie with the Norse for the top spot in the Horizon League.  WSU is now 16-11, 10-4 while NKU goes to 20-7, 10-4.

The Raiders, winners of four straight, were led by a career-high 29 points from junior Bill Wampler as he connected on 10 field goals, including four threes off the bench.  Sophomore Loudon Love collected his 11th double-double of the season with 20 points and 11 rebounds while adding two assists, a block and a steal.  Parker Ernsthausen added nine points off three three pointers, all in the first five minutes of the game.  Junior Cole Gentry pitched in eight points, all in the second half, and five assists.  The Raiders shot 55% from the field overall and outrebounded the Norse 31-27.  NKU shot 50% from the field.  WSU dominated in the paint with 38 points to just 26 for Northern.

First Half
In the early going, Ernsthausen lit the Raiders with three straight three pointers, but the Norse used threes of their own to take a 37-24 advantage by the eight-minute timeout.  Wampler helped cut the lead with seven straight points from two three and a layup at 43-32 by the final break.  After the timeout, WSU hit a short jumper followed by another Wampler three to cut it to 43-37, causing an NKU timeout.  That led to a three from Skyelar Potter to cut the lead to three.  A couple inside baskets by Love made the score 49-44 at halftime.  Wampler had 15 points while Love collected 10 points and five rebounds.  Ernsthausen finished with nine points.  NKU shot 61% and the Raiders 58% as the Norse won the boards 13-12.  The WSU bench accounted for 23 points.

Second Half
The Raiders continued the hot hand, taking the lead 54-53 at 16:18 but NKU took back the lead and were up by as much as seven points.  WSU chipped away that lead as it disappeared by the 10-minute mark.  The score bounced back and forth until the Raiders took it for good at 77-75 on a Wampler layup with 1:42 remaining.  Wampler proved to be the difference with 14 points in the final 20 minutes while Love scored 10 and Gentry eight.  WSU shot 50% in the second half while holding the Norse to 38%.

Nagy Said
"I think both teams were really, really good in the first half, and we stepped it up defensively in the second half that helped.  I am proud of the kids that they didn't give up after being down by 16, which can happen in big games with the big crowds.  Sometimes the kids go flat.  The key was not to panic.  It was a great college basketball game."
