Raiders and Grizzlies are Tied for Second
The Wright State men's basketball team will come home for five straight games when they welcome Oakland to the WSU Nutter Center Thursday night at 7:00 PM. The game will air on Big 106.5 FM/iHeart app and ESPN+ with Chris Collins and Jim Brown.
Wright State
The Raiders, 13-11 and 7-4, sit tied in second place with Oakland after splitting road games this past weekend, losing at UIC 67-35 and winning at IUPUI 79-74. At IUPUI Sunday, the Raiders were led by Bill Wampler off the bench with 16 points as Mark Hughes and Cole Gentry each finished with 13 points and Loudon Love with 12 points while playing only 16 minutes. Gentry had his consecutive free throws made streak ended as he missed his final attempt of the day. The streak stopped at 46, just one shy of the WSU mark.Â
Overall, Wright State is led by Wampler and Love, both averaging 14.7 points, with Gentry close behind at 13.2 points per game. WSU has won five of their last six games and hold a 9-2 mark at the Nutter Center this season. In the 11 home games this season, WSU has outscored their opponents by an average of 12.3 points per game while Wampler, Gentry and Love lead WSU in those games as well. Freshman Skyelar Potter has averaged 11.0 points off the bench in Nutter Center games while only averaging 2.9 points per game on the road.
The Raiders visited Oakland on Jan. 5 where they defeated the Grizzlies 89-73, leading much of the contest. Cole was tops for WSU with 22 points while Love and Wampler each finished with 19 points, and Mark Hughes pitched in 17. Love also led on the boards with 11 rebounds. OU's only lead was by three points less than a minute into the game. The Raiders lead 12-7 in the overall series and have won the last four meetings, including that decision at OU on Jan. 5.Â
Oakland
The Grizzlies, 11-13 and 7-4, are coming off an 83-68 win over Cleveland State after falling to Youngstown State 75-74--both at home. Brad Brechting recorded his first career double-double with 21 points and 18 rebounds, both career highs, as the Oakland fell to Youngstown State Thursday night at the O'rena. Brechting's 18 rebounds are the most by an Oakland player since 2017 when Isaiah Brock pulled down 18 boards, also against YSU. The Golden Grizzlies have now had a player record a double-double in three consecutive games. Jaevin Cumberland scored 19 points and grabbed five rebounds while Xavier Hill-Mais added 14 points and pulled down seven rebounds against the Penguins.
Hill-Mais leads the Grizzlies with averages of 19.8 points and 7.0 rebounds. OU is currently 5-7 on the road overall but 4-1 in road Horizon League games. This starts a four-game road swing for Oakland as they play at Northern Kentucky Saturday then travel for games at Green Bay and Milwaukee next weekend.
