@WSU_MBB Uses Strong Second Half to Pull Away

Raiders Outscore Oakland 41-21 in Final Period

The Wright State men's basketball team was down 41-35 at half but scored the first 18 points of the second half to cruise to a 76-62 win over Oakland Thursday night at the WSU Nutter Center.  The Raiders are now 14-11, 8-4 while the Grizzlies drop to 11-14, 7-5.

WSU was led by Loudon Love's 10th double-double of the season with 18 points and 10 rebounds while Bill Wampler pitched in 16 points and six boards.  Also in double figure scoring for the Raiders, Malachi Smith and Mark Hughes each had 11 points and Cole Gentry ended with 10 points and three steals.  Alan Vest grabbed eight rebounds as Wright State outrebounded OU 36-27 overall.  The green and gold shot 50% from the field, hitting five threes, while the Grizzlies, who shot 55% in the first half, were held to just 33% in the final 20 minutes.  Wright State posted 14 steals, causing 20 turnovers by Oakland.

First Half
Oakland controlled the tip and scored three quick baskets and a free throw to grab a 7-0 early lead until Love hit a pair from the line.  The Raiders chipped away, tying the game at 17 at the 11 minute mark on a Parker Ernsthausen layup.  Oakland ran back to a 34-25 advantage until WSU came back again to cut the score to four, but the Grizzlies went to the locker room up 41-35.  Love had 13 points and seven rebounds as Wampler collected 10 points.  OU was hot at 55% from the field with WSU shooting 45%.

Second Half
WSU scored the first 18 points to erase the deficit and take the lead 53-41 in the first six minutes.  The Grizzlies first scored in the second half at the 13:20 mark.  That was followed by a Hughes three pointer and a layup to make the score 58-43.  The WSU barrage continued with a 69-50 lead by 7:34 remaining.  Wright State outscored the Grizzlies 41-21 while shooting 55%.  Gentry scored his 10 points all in the second half while Hughes also put in 10 points to lead WSU.  The Raiders won the boards 18-13.

Nagy Said
"Our halftime was uneventful.  We talked about Oakland coming in here ready to play, and that they always play hard.  We were emotionally flat in the first half.  We played more behind instead fronting and made it tougher for them score in the second half.  It really helped that Mark hit the three to start the play.
Cole Gentry perhaps had his best half of the season in the second half."
