Raiders are Tied for First Place
The Wright State men's basketball team will play its final regular-season game Saturday against the Panthers in Milwaukee at 7:00 PM eastern. The Raiders are currently in a first place tie with Northern Kentucky. NKU will play at Green Bay Saturday. Fans can listen to Chris Collins and Jim Brown on Big 106.5 FM/iHeart app or watch on ESPN+.
Wright State
The Raiders, 18-12 and 12-5, had a six-game winning streak broken Thursday night as they lost at Green Bay 70-67. WSU trailed much of the game but never by more than 10 points. Sophomore Loudon Love had 21 points to lead the Raiders. It marked his third game in the last four with at least 20 points, averaging 20.0 points during that stretch. He has scored in double-figures in 16 straight games with five games of 20 points or better. Over the last two games, the center has shot 67.7% (20-30) from the field and 87.5% (7-8) from the line. He ranks ninth in league scoring and third in rebounding.
Another player trending up has been freshman Malachi Smith, who has scored double digits in four of the last six contests while averaging 9.5 points off the bench. In those six games, he is shooting 50% (21-42) from the field and 92.9% (13-14) from the line, including converting his last 11 free throw attempts. Junior Bill Wampler, who had 18 points at Green Bay Thursday night, has shot 50% (12-24) from three-point range over the last four games. He has averaged 15.8 points in the last nine contests, a point better than his 14.8 season average.
WSU currently is tied for first in scoring defense with NKU as well, allowing just 68.0 points per game while Milwaukee is last in scoring offense at 69.5.Â
The teams have split the 60 previous meetings, tied at 30 wins each during the overall series. WSU won 56-54 on January 24 at the Nutter Center when Love finished with 21 points and 11 rebounds. Darius Roy had 15 points for Milwaukee. The Panthers won both regular-season meetings last year, but WSU won at the tournament semifinals in Detroit 59-53. The last WSU win in Milwaukee came on January 14, 2017 by a score of 70-67.
Milwaukee
The Panthers, 9-21 and 4-13, will end their season Saturday after not qualifying for this year's Horizon League Tournament. Milwaukee is in the midst of a 10-game losing streak that started at WSU on January 24. UWM has posted six of its nine wins at home but has not won since defeating IUPUI on January 19.
Milwaukee is coming off a home loss to Northern Kentucky 65-55 after leading much of the game Thursday night. Down 34-28 at half, the Norse shot 58% from the field in the final 20 minutes. The Panthers' bench outscored NKU 22-3 overall. Vance Johnson led UWM with 13 points and seven rebounds.
On the season, Roy holds a team-best 15.8 points per game average, eighth in league scoring. DeAndre Abram averages 12.1 points and 7.1 rebounds, fourth in the conference rebounding race.
