@WSUBaseball Comeback Falls Short

Wright State (9-5) saw their 5-game win streak come to an end against Milwaukee. The Panthers had a huge day at the plate, scoring 11 runs on 15 hits including a stretch of nine unanswered runs. Wright State took a 6-2 lead into the fifth which was quickly erased by four runs in the fifth and five in the seventh from Milwaukee. Wright State tallied four runs in the ninth and nearly erased a five-run deficit but fell a run short, falling 11-10. JD Orr continued his recent hot streak with a 2 for 3 day at the plate which included a run and a stolen base. The Raiders return to Nischwitz Stadium on Saturday for game two of the opening Horizon League series.

1st Inning
Bear Bellomy came out firing strikes, working an 0-2 count on all three batters in the first and retiring them in order. In the bottom of the inning, JD Orr hit an infield single and scooted to second for his 18thsteal on the season, moving into 5thplace all-time in school history for that statistic. Panther starter Jared Reklaitis attempted to pickoff the speedy Orr at second but threw the ball into center which put Orr on third. Reklaitis struck out Peyton Burdick, but the pitch escaped the glove of catcher Tyler Bordner. Burdick landed at first and Orr slid into home safely for the first Raider run. Seth Gray smoked a ball inside the first base line just beyond the reach of the diving first basemen. Gray legged out a triple and scored Peyton Burdick.

4th Inning
Bellomy retired the first seven Panther hitters until Oakland Scanlan sent a ball flying over the left field fence for a solo homer in the third. Milwaukee struck again in the fourth with an RBI single from Joe Vyskocil to tie the game 2-2. Bellomy recorded his fifth strikeout to bring out the Raider offense. Weatherford took the first pitch he saw into left field for a single and Justin McConnell bunted him to second. After Justin McConnell drew a walk, Connor Giltrow and JD Orr each recorded RBI singles. Chase Slone then sent a line drive into left center scoring Giltrow and Orr and pushing the Raider lead to 6-2.

5th Inning
Milwaukee strung together three straight singles to start the inning and threatened with the bases loaded and nobody out. A wild pitch and two more singles tied the game at 6-6 and forced Bellomy out of the game.

7th Inning
Mitch Gremling danced around trouble in the sixth but couldn't escape in the seventh. The Panthers connected on four straight singles and took the go-ahead run. Bradley Deboutte took over on the mound, but the Milwaukee offensive kept rolling. Deboutte hit two batters and allowed an RBI which allowed three more runs. When the dust settled, Milwaukee held an 11-6 lead over the Raiders after nine unanswered runs.

9th Inning
Wright State rallied for four runs in an epic comeback attempt on the back of a Zach Weatherford two-run home run, but fell just short after Damon Dues flew out to left field.
