1st Inning
After
Sam Wirsing claimed his first victory of the season against the Cincinnati Bearcats last Tuesday, the right hander returned on the mound to face the same Bearcat team on Tuesday from Nischwitz Stadium. Wirsing struck out two batters in the opening inning to begin a strong outing. In the bottom of the first, the Raider offense jumped on the Bearcats early.
JD Orr took the first pitch and sent the next one back up the middle for a single.
Zach Weatherford, playing in the second spot in the lineup for
Alex Sogard, crushed a ball to left for a two-run homer.
2nd Inning
Wirsing set down the Bearcats in order in just six pitches. On offense, Weatherford added another RBI with a single to right which scored
Tyler Black from second.
Peyton Burdick then lined his second double into left center field which scored two more runs for Wright State, who jumped out to a 5-0 lead after the second.
4th Inning
Cincinnati threatened for the first time in the third inning with two runners in scoring position. Wirsing worked around any trouble with a timely pop fly to retire the side in his third scoreless inning. Wirsing cruised through the fourth and Wright State went to work again offensively. The Raiders extended the inning with a Cincinnati error.
Peyton Burdick sent a ball over the head of the UC right fielder and legged out a triple that scored two more runs.
6th Inning
The Bearcats finally crossed the plate for a run in the fifth and added another run in the sixth. Wirsing finished his outing after 5.2 innings on the mound and was replaced in favor of
Mitch Gremling. After Cincinnati scored another run in the sixth, the Raiders again extended their lead to seven runs. Orr singled and stole second to begin the bottom half of the frame.
Zach Weatherford not only scored Orr but sped around all the bases after a UC error.
9th Inning
Wright State added another insurance run in the seventh thanks to an
Alex Alders RBI double. The Bearcats scored twice in the bottom of the ninth, but
Wes Earles recorded the final out to give Wright State the 10-4 victory.
Wright State (12-5) swept the two-game series against the Cincinnati Bearcats. Weatherford and Burdick each contributed 4 RBI and
Sam Wirsing picked up his second win on the mound this season. The Raiders return to action in an impromptu matchup against Northwestern Ohio on Wednesday from Nischwitz Stadium.
