@WSUBaseball Closes Northern Kentucky Series With Victory Sunday

Highland Heights, Kentucky – The Wright State baseball team wrapped up its three game series against rival Northern Kentucky on Sunday, and the Raiders yet again jumped out to an early lead, just as they had done in the first two of the series. Unlike the first two games, however, the green and gold were able to hang on and earn the victory in the final game by a score of 9-1.  WSU is now 21-10, 7-5.

SCORING

1st Inning – Before the Norse ever came to bat in Sunday's game, they already had a four-run hole to dig out of. Zach Weatherford continued his hot hitting in the first inning, extending his current hitting streak to six games, his second longest of the season (7 games), with an RBI single, scoring JD Orr from third base. Weatherford's single loaded the bases with one out, and a Zane Harris walk and a Damon Dues fielder's choice combined with a Norse error allowed the Raiders to post four runs in the first inning.  The Raiders are 21-10, 7-5.

2nd Inning – With no outs in the second and Cameron Rountree on first base, Tyler Black belted his fifth home run of the season to right field, putting the Raiders handily ahead at 6-0.

7th Inning – The Raiders would add three more runs in the seventh on a Damon Dues RBI single, a throwing error on Norse pitcher Gunnar Barnard, and an RBI groundout from Tyler Black, his third RBI of the game.

9th Inning – Northern Kentucky would break up the shutout with two outs in the ninth inning, as a Seth Gray throwing error allowed Trey Bowden to score from third base, bringing the eventual final score to 9-1.

NOTES
  • Peyton Burdick went 0-1 with four walks in Sunday's contest, ending his 12-game hitting streak, but continuing his now 28-game on base streak.
  • Tyler Black posted his fifth multi-RBI game of the season on Sunday.
  • Damon Dues and Chase Slone both tallied two hits in the game, their sixth and eighth multi-hit games respectively.
Wright State (21-10, 7-5) will remain on the road during the week, as they will compete in the Joe Nuxhall Tournament Tuesday and Wednesday. They will face the Miami Redhawks on Tuesday in Cincinnati, and their Wednesday opponent will depend on the result of their game against Miami as well as the result of Xavier and Cincinnati, also being played Tuesday as part of the tournament. The Raiders will return to Horizon League play next Friday as the Oakland Golden Grizzlies come to Nischwitz Stadium for a three-game series starting at 3:00 PM Friday.
