Raiders win WSU Invitational with second sweep of the weekend

The Wright State volleyball team wrapped up a three win weekend and extended its winning streak to eight straight games with a 3-0 victory over in-state foe Toledo on Saturday night to conclude the Wright State Invitational.

Wright State volleyball sweeps home tournament winning all three matches this weekend, extending their record to 8-1.
 
The Raiders finished with 59 kills and a hitting percentage of .288 in the three set sweep as Celia Powers tallied a match-high 18 kills and a hitting percentage of .350 after committing four errors. Teddie Sauer was close behind with 16 kills of her own and Taylor Gibson racked up 10 kills. Lainey Stephenson added four kills while passing out 40 assists and totalling 13 digs. Jenna Story led all players with 26 digs. As a team, Wright State totaled six blocks.
              
Set 1
Wright State's defense struggled to stop the Rockets early on and trailed 10-7. Sauer smashed a kill for the Raiders to take the lead at 16-15 before Nyssa Baker added a block to push Wright State into the red zone first at 20-17. As the score went point-for-point, Sauer knocked down set point for the Raiders to win 25-23.
 
Set 2
Powers scored first point for the Raiders but Toledo grabbed an early 5-2 advantage. Hannah Colvin served up an ace for Wright State to take a 9-8 lead and Gibson knocked down two kills to extend the lead to 12-10. The Raiders wouldn't look back from there, going on to win the set 25-20.
 
Set 3
The Rockets jumped out to another fast start and led 12-6 before Wright State got its offense going. The Raiders tallied 11 of the next 15 points overall to bring the match to a tie score at 17-17 thanks to a Sauer kill. The closing moments of the match went back and forth, as Toledo tied the score at 24-24 and again at 25-25 before two kills from the Raiders gave them the 27-25 set win.


ALL TOURNAMENT TEAM
Powers was named the MVP of the Wright State Invitational on Saturday night, as voted on by the coaches of the participating teams. Stephenson and Baker were also named to the seven-member team.


UP NEXT
Wright State hits the road again next weekend for its final non-conference and tournament matchups of the season at the Ball State Tournament. The Raiders will take on Missouri State, Ball State and Austin Peay.
