Wright State extends winning streak to seven in first march Saturday

The Wright State volleyball team extended its winning streak to seven games on Saturday afternoon, sweeping Western Illinois in their first of two games during day two of the Wright State Invitational. The victory marked the Raiders' fourth sweep in their nine total wins to date in the 2019 season. Wright State wraps up the weekend's action tonight at 7:00 p.m. against Toledo.
 
Celia Powers finished with a match-high nine kills, while Nyssa Baker committed zero errors off 10 attempts to finish the match with seven kills and a hitting percentage of .700. The Raiders other middle, Teddie Sauer, finished with six kills of her own. The Raiders knocked doubled Western Illinois in total kills, finishing with 40, and tallied a combined hitting percentage of .204. The defense was able to pick up 55 digs in the short match, led by Jenna Story's 22 digs and Lainey Stephenson's 10.
 
Set 1
The Leathernecks jumped ahead early before Wright State tied the score at 8-8 and Hannah Colvin knocked down back-to-back aces to give Wright State the lead by two. The Raiders ran with the lead, capitalizing on Western Illinois mistakes to extend the advantage up to 18-9. After the Leathernecks fought back a few points, Sauer knocked down Wright State's final point to win the set 25-14.
 
Set 2
The points went back and forth in the beginning of the set, until the Wright State offense contributed consecutive kills to take the lead at 5-3 and the Raiders went on a run to reach 16-11. Stephenson added two kills and Gibson added one to push the Raiders to reach set point, where Sauer again ended the set again with a kill for a 25-16 set win.
 
Set 3
A pair of kills from Callie Martin and Megan Alders get the Raiders started as Wright State took the lead at 6-2 and continued to lead the Leathernecks by six when they reached 10 points. Out of a Western Illinois timeout, Powers knocked down a kill to add to the Raiders advantage. Alders powered a kill to the Leathernecks left back as the score reached 14-7. After Western Illinois fought back to shorten the deficit to four, Grace Hauck ended the run with a kill to the opponents deep court and Powers added two kills back-to-back to push the Raiders into the red zone at 21-14. A kill from Stephenson ended the match at 25-21.
