Volleyball tops Akron for second sweep

The Raiders add another sweep to the 2019 season as they defeated Akron Saturday afternoon. Wright State started late in the first set being down 12-3, but made an incredible comeback to win 25-18. The momentum grew from the first win and escalated all the way into the third set for the Raiders. During the second set, the offensive line committed zero hitting errors having 16 kills off 37 attempts. Lainey Stephenson succeeded at keeping the offense spread out, but Megan Alders had the most attempts at 25 for the match. Along with Alders, Taylor Gibson and Teddie Sauer finished the match with eight kills. Stephenson and Celia Powers following with five and six kills. The Raiders had a hitting percentage of .269, racking up 36 kills and only 11 errors.
 
There were great defensive efforts made by the Raiders, who racked up 59 digs during this three set match. Jenna Story led both teams with 20 digs, while Ellee Ruskaup and Stephenson followed with 11 digs each. The grit and determination from players in the back row showed in the offense's success. Sauer, Powers and Alders all added powerful solo blocks to make up the collective seven blocks for the front line defense.
 
Set 1
The Zips had the first run of the game scoring four in a row until Nyssa Baker knocked down a block for the Raiders first point. Wright State took a timeout when the score reached 8-2 to try to improve; their offensive was struggling to put the ball down on the Zips side. Sauer racked up two kills, and Gibson followed with one to make the score 12-6. The Raiders shortened their deficit by two points, which led to Akron calling a timeout at 12-10. Sauer earned an ace to tie the score at 13-13. Wright State took their first lead at 18-17, making an incredible come back to win the game 25-18.
 
Set 2
The Raiders came out leading the second set, credit to their offensively strong start. Ruskaup served strong at the service line to go on a four-point run. Wright State had a five point lead when the Zips used their first time out. The Raiders had seven kills with no errors coming out of the first timeout. Back-to-back challenges from both head coaches when the score was 10-6; Akron came out winning the point. Alders had an intense solo block to extend Raiders lead 14-8. After great defensive efforts, the Raiders won a long rally to reach 17 points. Stephenson had the offense spread out across the board for the Raiders, as they committed zero hitting errors this set. Gibson banged out two straight kills to end the set, Raiders win 25-13.
 
Set 3
Wright State kept the momentum on their side as Ruskaup added an ace to make the score 3-1. Alders and Sauer contributed offensively to add three points to the Raiders lead. The Zips took the first timeout for the set when they were down by six at 10-4. The Raiders behind the service line have had five aces, three in this set. Offense and defense played tough to drive the Raiders into the red zone at 20-17. Sauer added another ace to bring the score to 22-17, Raiders having the lead for entire set. Hauck added a kill to bring Raiders to match point; Powers finishes it with a solo block. Wright State wins the match 25-19.
