Raiders win big in HL opener

The Wright State women's basketball team tallied its first win of the 2020-21 season Saturday afternoon on the road, as the Raiders defeated Detroit Mercy 75-55 on the first official day of Horizon League action.
With the win, Wright State improves to 1-2 overall and 1-0 in Horizon League play, while Detroit Mercy falls to 0-5 overall and 0-1 in the Horizon. The Raiders remain in Detroit to face off against the Titans again tomorrow as a part of the Horizon League's back-to-back playing schedule this season.
The first quarter was a back-and-forth battle between the two teams that saw five lead changes in the early minutes of the contest. A Tyler Frierson free-throw with 36 seconds left in the quarter gave Wright State a nine-point advantage heading into the second quarter. Wright State continued to pull away, heading into the locker room up 42-22 at halftime. The Titans looked to cut the Raiders' 31 point lead down in the fourth quarter, outscoring Wright State 16-12 in the final 10 minutes, but it wouldn't be enough.
Junior KK White led the scoring efforts for the Raiders with 18 points. White finished the afternoon shooting 7-for-13 from the field and 3-for-4 from the line while also pulling down four rebounds. Senior Tyler Frierson recorded her first double-double of the season, as she added 12 points and pulled down 11 rebounds for Wright State, finishing the afternoon 5-for-6 from the field and 2-for-4 from the line.
Wright State shot 43.5 percent for the game as a team, while Detroit Mercy converted on just 30.6 percent of its shots. Both teams saw a combined 11 shots go in beyond the arc. Wright State finished the night shooting 59.3 percent (16-for-27) from the free-throw line while Detroit Mercy connected on 11 of its 17 such opportunities (64.7 percent). The Raider bench outscored the Titans' 39-17.
The Raiders won the battle on the boards, outrebounding the Titans 58-30 overall, with 18 offensive rebounds and 40 defensive. Detroit Mercy finished the night with eight offensive and 30 defensive rebounds.
