Raiders drop Saturday matchup at Tennessee

The Wright State baseball team made a late-inning push on Saturday afternoon, but it was not enough, as No. 11 Tennessee evened the weekend series and handed the Raiders a 3-1 loss down in Knoxville.

Both sides finished the afternoon with as the same number of hits as men left on base (Tennessee 9, Wright State 7) and three of the game's four runs have in the final innings.

Wright State will go for the series win on Sunday afternoon with a 1 p.m. first pitch.

Tennessee got on the board with a solo home run to lead off the bottom of the third, but that would be the only scoring for both sides until the seventh, when the hosts used another solo homer to extend their lead to two runs.

The Raiders responded in the top of the eighth, with Gehrig Anglin and Tyler Black set up on the corners following back-to-back one out singles. After a Zane Harris flyout, the Tennessee's pitcher's pickoff attempt to first was errant and allowed Black to move up to second and Anglin to score from third and cut the deficit to one run. Wright State was unable to push across a second run to tie the game, as Alex Alders grounded out to end the inning.

Tennessee answered the Wright State run with a run of its own in the bottom of the eighth, using a one out walk and stolen base to set up an RBI single and move the lead back up to two runs. The Raiders had one final chance in the ninth, as Konner Piotto doubled with one out in the frame, but was left there with back-to-back strikeouts to end the afternoon.

Anglin and Piotto each had two hits to pace the Raider offense, as Piotto and Justin McConnell both tallied doubles. Starter Bradley Brehmer allowed one run on six hits with three strikeouts in 5.2 innings of work to get saddled with the loss.

Tennessee's Jackson Leath tossed 4.2 innings out of the bullpen, allowing one unearned run and four hits while striking out two, to earn the win. Offensively, Max Ferguson (two hits) and Liam Spence each had solo homers to pace the Volunteers at the plate.
