Black's three hits power Raiders past Tennessee

The Wright State baseball team used a four-run sixth inning to earn a 6-3 Sunday afternoon victory over No. 11 Tennessee as the Raiders took two of three from the Volunteers and won their first series of the season.

The Raiders return home and will play at Nischwitz Stadium for the first time this year with a Tuesday afternoon midweek matchup against Miami (OH). First pitch is slated for 3 p.m.

Sunday, Wright State scored single runs in the third and fourth innings before the four-run sixth frame. The insurance runs would be needed, as Tennessee plated two runs in the seventh and an additional run in the ninth before the Raiders wrapped up the win.

Raider starter Austin Cline earned the win after tossing five shutout innings, allowing three hits while striking out three.

Wright State got on the board in the third when Jay Luikart drew a two-out walk and scored moments later on Gehrig Anglin's double into left field. The Raiders added to the lead in the fourth when they loaded the bases with three singles to open the inning and Tyler Black scored on Cameron Rountree's groundball double play.

The big inning was the sixth, with Black getting the action started with his two-run homer to right field before Luikart delivered a two-out, two-RBI single back up the middle and the Raiders led by six.

Tennessee responded in the seventh with a pair of one-out runs via a single and a groundout, and then the Volunteers pushed across another run in the ninth on a groundout and had two runners on and the tying run at the plate when Brock Nartker forced the hosts into a strikeout and flyout to end the afternoon.

Black finished the afternoon 3-for-5 with his two RBI and two runs scored, while Luikart also drove home two runs. Alex Alders added two hits of his own, including a double in the eighth inning.

Following Cline's five innings of work, Sam Wirsing tossed three innings out of the bullpen, allowing two runs on three hits with a strikeout, before Nartker struck out two of the three outs he recorded in the ninth to wrap up the win.
