Second half push not enough as Raiders fall at UIC

CHICAGO – The Wright State men's soccer team saw its second half scoring push come up sort on Wednesday night against UIC, as the Raiders dropped a 3-2 road decision in Horizon League play.

Trailing by three goals and playing down a man after Harvey Slade's red card, Wright State (4-6-1, 3-3-1 HL) got on the board first on a penalty kick goal from Ids Hannema in the 60th minute before Reece Allbaugh scored in the 86th as part of a frantic Raider push to close the night.

UIC (6-4-2, 4-2-0 HL) took the lead early on Younes Dayekh's penalty kick goal in the third minute before Dayekh found the bottom right corner of the net in the 18th minute to double the UIC advantage. The Flames appeared to wrap the night up early in the second half on Josiah Ash's tally into the top left corner in the 55th minute, but the Raiders had other plans.

After a UIC yellow card off a Wright State free kick, Hannema stepped up and buried the PK opportunity to cut into the deficit. Pushing forward in the final minutes, Allbaugh found the bottom right corner in the 86th but the Raiders were unable to find the equalizer, with a final corner kick chance booted away by UIC as the clock expired.

Wright State was outshot 22-17 overall, as UIC tallied double-digit shot attempts in both halves, but the Raiders finished the night putting seven shots on frame to the Flames' nine. Allbaugh finished with five shots, including three on frame, while Hannema added five attempts of his own, as the pair paced the offensive attack for Wright State. Dayekh's five attempts led UIC.  Raider goalkeeper Sebastian Jimenez turned in six saves in a losing effort, including four in the first half, while UIC keeper Andres Vasquez turned away five shots of his own.

A chippy match throughout, the night ended with 28 total fouls, 15-13 towards UIC, while there were nine cards handed out, including six towards Wright State.

The Raiders are back in action on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field when they will host Oakland in a 2 p.m. match. Wright State will have only two of its final five regular season matches at home, but both home matches are two of the Raiders' three remaining Horizon League contests.
