Volleyball takes care of Cleveland State in three sets Friday night

DAYTON – The Wright State volleyball team tallied its fifth-straight three set victory with a win over Cleveland State on Friday night inside McLin Gymnasium. The five sweeps in a row mark the Raiders' most consecutive sweeps under head coach Allie Matters.

Wright State (13-6, 5-2 HL) took the opening set 25-14 and the second set 25-16 before wrapping up the night with another 25-14 set as the Raiders hit .279 as a team and held Cleveland State (6-14, 4-5 HL) to a -0.057 team hitting percentage.

Celia Powers led all players with 11 kills in the sweep, while Callie Martin was also in double digits with 10 kills of her own. Nyssa Baker and Megan Alders each had six kills, while Baker added a match-high seven blocks. Lainey Stephenson passed out 30 of Wright State's 35 assists, while Jenna Story recorded 16 digs.

Teddie Sauer finished the night with five kills and heads into Saturday's match four kills shy of the 1,000 mark for her career, while Story has moved to within 32 digs of the Wright State program record.

The Raiders used an 8-0 run early in the first set to take control of the night and never looked back, used a 9-4 run in the midway point of the second set to swing all momentum ahead of another 8-0 run, this time to close out the second set. The third set saw Wright State jump out in front, scoring seven of the first nine points in the set, and the Raiders later ended the night on a 6-1 run to complete the sweep.

Wright State returns to McLin Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon in the fifth and final match of the homestand when the Raiders welcome Oakland to town for a 4 p.m. start.
