GREEN BAY – The Wright State volleyball team grabbed its first Horizon League win of the season with a three-set sweep Sunday afternoon at Green Bay behind a pair of double-digit kill performances.
The Raiders (9-6, 1-2 HL) took the opening set 25-15 before set wins of 25-20 and 25-18 to get out of town with the sweep over the Phoenix (7-10, 2-3 HL).
Callie Martin tallied a match-high 11 kills and
Nyssa Baker was the only other player on either side with double-digit kills as she finished with 10 kills of her own.
Eight different players recorded kills for Wright State, with
Sam Ott turning in a nine-kill effort off the bench and
Teddie Sauer adding eight kills of her own. Baker and Sauer each had two blocks, while the Raiders finished the afternoon with six aces, including two each from
Jenna Story and
Ellee Ruskaup.
Lainey Stephenson tallied a double-double, passing out 33 of Wright State's 39 total assists, while adding a match-high 14 digs. Story collected 13 digs of her own and
Celia Powers added 11 digs as well.
Wright State used a five-point run early in the opening set to take control, later adding a 9-1 scoring stretch to jump out to the advantage. In the second set, the Raiders withstood a 7-0 run from Green Bay early in the set before a five-point run of their own to take the set lead and later closed the second set on a 5-2 run. Wright State used three separate three-point spurts in the third set in what was otherwise a back-and-forth set to end the afternoon.
The Raiders return home for the start of a five match homestand, the longest of the season, beginning on Tuesday night as Wright State hosts Youngstown State. Tuesday's match is slated for a 6 p.m. start and is expected to be streamed on ESPN+.
