The Wright State golf team climbed two spots on Sunday to wrap up its opening tournament of the 2021 season with a fifth-place team finish at The Invitational at Savannah Harbor, while Mikkel Mathiesen finished seventh overall individually.
Â
The Raiders, who sat in eighth place as a team after the opening day that saw them play a round and a half before darkness set in, came out and finished up their second round Sunday morning, carding a 288 as a team. Fighting gusty conditions in the afternoon during round three, Wright State tallied a 298 final round team card as scoring went up across the board as teams battled the wind.
Â
Mathiesen finished up his second round on Sunday morning with his second straight round of 71, joining his first round total, before a two-over 74 in the final round to finish the weekend with an even 216.
Â
Cameron Willis and Austin Schoonmaker each finished tied for 18th at four-over 220 for the tournament, with both firing rounds of 72 in the second round before Willis carded a 74 in the final round and Schoonmaker a 75. Davis Root and Cole Corder finished tied for 37th with 225 total scores.
Â
Wright State now returns home to prepare for a trip back down to Georgia in two weeks, participating in the Sea Palms Invitational in St. Simons Island, Ga., the second of six regular season tournaments ahead of the Horizon League Championship in late April.
