Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Story tallies 37 digs in Raiders' Tuesday sweep

The Wright State volleyball team swept Oakland on Tuesday night to improve to 6-0 on the season and tie the program record for most consecutive true road wins to start a campaign.

Wright State's four true road wins to open 2021 equals the mark set by the 1995 team that also won its first four true road matches - at ACC foes Virginia and North Carolina State and at Midwestern Collegiate Conference (now Horizon League) foes Milwaukee and Green Bay. The four wins in 1995 took a combined 14 sets (3-0 vs. VA & GB; 3-1 vs. NCSU & MKE), while this season's Raiders did it in 13 sets behind a sweep at Milwaukee and the wins at Oakland.

Additionally, Jenna Story recorded 37 digs in the win, the 12th time in her career that she has recorded 30-plus digs in a match and the third-most she's had in a single match, while the only matches she's had with more (39 and 38 digs) were both five set matches. Story's 37 digs on Tuesday night are tied for the 12th-most digs in a three-set match in NCAA Division I volleyball history, and there have been only six players to record a higher dig total in a three-set match.

Story's 37 digs Tuesday are the most in NCAA Division I history since Murray State's Becca Fernandez had 38 on November 9, 2018. The Division I record for digs in a three-set match is 50, held by Grambling's Chelsee Goins (Oct. 2011) and Arizona State's Sydney Donahue (Aug. 2006).

Tuesday night, the Raiders won the opening set 25-14 before a 25-18 second set victory and a 25-20 winning mark in the third set to head home with the win. Wright State finished with a .287 hitting percentage as a team, including marks of .316 and .317 in the first and third sets, while Oakland managed just a .124 mark and had 20 total errors on the night.

Three Raiders finished the night with double-digit kills, led by Megan Alders' match-high 13 kills. Celia Powers tallied 11 kills of her own and Teddie Sauer had 10, with Powers added three blocks and two service aces. Nyssa Baker stuffed three blocks of her own and Sauer rejected two as well. Lainey Stephenson passed out a match-high 33 of Wright State's 42 total assists, while Jenna Story's match-best 37 digs accounted for the largest chunk of the Raiders' 87 total digs.

Set 1
Wright State jumped out to an 8-3 lead behind kills from Alders, Baker, Powers and Sauer before doubling up the score at 12-6. Oakland ran off a run of its own to pull to 13-10, only to see the Raiders eight of the next 10 points to make it 21-12 thanks to four kills and a service ace from Powers. Wright State wrapped up the set with back-to-back kills from Sauer and Sam Wolf for a 25-14 win.

Set 2
The Raiders again started strong, opening the set up 6-1 and eventually 10-3 behind three kills each from Alders and Powers. Oakland again came storming back, this time with five straight points to pull to within two at 10-8. After three consecutive Raider points to go up 13-8, neither side was able to string together more than three straight points until Wright State closed the set on a 5-0 run thanks to kills from Alder and Sauer and another service ace from Powers.

Set 3
The third set saw Oakland jump out to an early lead at 7-3, with the score climbing to 17-12 Oakland before the Raiders turned on the pressure and rolled off five straight points to knot it at 17-all thanks to two kills each from Wolf and Stephenson. After an Oakland point, Wright State closed the match on an 8-2 run behind Baker, Sauer and Wolf to end the night.
