Mathiesen tied for first; Raiders second as a team after opening round of Horizon League Championship

The Wright State golf team sits in second place overall as a team following the opening round of the 2021 Horizon League Championship in West Lafayette, Indiana. Additionally, all five Raiders sit inside the top 15 on the individual leaderboard after the first 18 holes.

The Raiders sit at four-over after their 292 team round, trailing only Oakland, who shot an even 288 as a team in Sunday's first round. Wright State is 11 shots ahead of third-place Robert Morris.

Mikkel Mathiesen is tied for first after an opening round 70 to sit at two-under, carding five birdies during the round, including three over the final nine holes. The remaining Raiders all bunched within a couple shots of each other, beginning with Cameron Willis, who sits in a tie for seventh after a one-over opening round with four birdies. Bryce Haney is tied for 11th at two-over after a solid round that saw him birdie two of the final three holes of his afternoon.

Tyler Goecke and Austin Schoonmaker are each three-over after 18 holes in a tie for 15th. Goecke carded three birdies and Schoonmaker had two of his own.

As a team, Wright State carded 54 pars to pace the field, while the Raiders' 16 birdies were one off the high mark set by Oakland. Haney's 14 birdies were the most by any player, while Mathiesen had five birdies, tied with Okaland's Colin Sikkenga for the most on the day, while Willis' four were just behind.

Oakland's Thomas Giroux is tied with Mathiesen at two-under atop the individual leaderboard, while the Golden Grizzlies also have Sikkenga and Chris Handy sitting tied for third after even-par rounds to give them the slight edge over the Raiders on the team leaderboard heading into Monday.

Wright State will be the first group to tee off on Monday morning for the second round, starting on the first hole, with Oakland second to play beginning at 7:45 a.m. as all 10 teams will start on the first hole every 15 minutes, with Detroit Mercy the final group to tee off at 9:45 a.m.
