HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, KY – Harvey Slade's last-second header lifted the Wright State men's soccer team past Northern Kentucky in double overtime Saturday night in Horizon League action.
The Raiders (3-4, 2-1 HL) used a free kick opportunity from midfield inside the final minute of double overtime to force an eventual corner kick opportunity. With every Raider packed into the box,
Presten Manthey sent a ball towards the crowd that connected with Slade's head and off the far post before deflecting into the net with 11 seconds to spare.
Wright State was the aggressor in both overtime periods, tallying six shot opportunities and a couple of good looks leading up to Slade's winner. The Raider second half pressure lead to the equalizer in the 77th minute to eventually force the extra time, as Manthey was again involved, this time sending a cross towards the box that connected with a diving
Zion Beaton header to knot the score.
The Raiders finished with a 22-16 shot advantage as both sides sent nine attempts on frame. Manthey's corner kick was Wright State's eighth of the night, but its first since having seven opportunities in the first half. Slade, Beaton and
Joe Kouadio all finished with four shots to pace all players, while Slade and Kouadio put a pair of shots on frame. Manthey added three shots to his two assists, while three other Raiders recorded a pair of shots each.
On the other end, Wright State keeper
Sebastian Jimenez turned away six shots, including four saves in the opening 45 minutes before three saves in the second half and one in the first overtime.
