HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, KY – The Wright State volleyball team make quick work of Northern Kentucky on Tuesday night, as the Raiders swept the hosts in three sets to run their winning streak to eight straight heading into a pair of road matches this weekend.
Wright State (13-3, 5-0 Horizon) now remains on the road for action at Purdue Fort Wayne Friday night before a visit to IUPUI Saturday afternoon. The Friday matchup is expected to be streamed on ESPN+.
The 12th meeting between the teams since the start of 2018, Tuesday night was just the third match to end in a sweep, all of which have been in favor of Wright State. The Raiders and Northern Kentucky (5-11, 2-3 Horizon) have at least one more meeting on tap this fall, a November 1 matchup in McLin Gymnasium, plus a potential postseason contest.
The Raiders took a tight opening set 27-25 before following that up with a 25-15 second set and a 25-23 third set to close the night. Wright State spread the stats around, with
Taylor Bransfield the lone Raider with double-digit kills at 11 as six different player recorded multiple kills in the win.
Sam Ott added seven kills and a trio of digs, while
Megan Alders and
Callie Martin each notched five kills, with Martin recording a match-high 22 digs.
Jenna Story added 19 digs and
Lainey Stephenson had the only double-double of the night as she finished with 11 digs and passed out 27 of the Raiders' 31 assists.
SET ONE
Northern Kentucky jumped ahead with four of the first six points and later led 6-3 before Wright State responded with a 9-2 run of its own for the advantage in the midway point of the set. Both sides traded short scoring runs as the Raiders scored seven of nine at one point to push to a 22-17 mark. NKU answered with a 7-2 run of its own while staving off set point before Wright State took the set with three of the final four points thanks to a trio of NKU errors.
SET TWO
The Raiders took control of the set early and never looked back, leading 6-2 behind three kills from Bransfield. Northern Kentucky made a methodical push to climb back into the set and trailed by four at 15-11 but Wright State used a 7-0 run to put the set out of reach thanks to kills from Alders and Stephenson, along with a pair of service aces from Martin. The Raiders closed the set in the same fashion as the first, tallying three of the final four points off of three NKU errors.
SET THREE
Back-and-forth early, NKU led 9-7 before Wright State rolled off seven of the next eight points behind kills from Alders, Martin and Ott. The hosts pulled to within two at 18-16 but the Raiders responded with the next three points thanks to kills from Martin and Stephenson. A trio of Raider errors down the stretch let NKU pull within striking distance, but Bransfield ended the night with the final two kills to complete the sweep.
