FORT WAYNE, IN – The Wright State volleyball team made quick work of host Purdue Fort Wayne Friday night, as the Raiders tallied a sweep in their first of two matches this weekend to run their winning streak to nine straight matches.
Wright State, who recorded its fourth consecutive sweep victory, now heads to take on IUPUI on Saturday afternoon in a 4 p.m. start.
The Raiders (14-3, 6-0 Horizon) hit .362 as a team, paced by Fort Wayne native
Taylor Bransfield's 15 kills and .609 hitting percentage to hand Purdue Fort Wayne (5-12, 1-5 Horizon) its fourth straight loss.
Bransfield's 15 kills were one off her career-best that she previously tallied twice this season, while she was joined in double figures with
Megan Alders' 10 kills.
Callie Martin added eight kills and a team-leading 13 digs, while
Jenna Story added 10 digs and
Lainey Stephenson dug out eight balls. Martin had four of the Raiders' six service aces while Bransfield and Story each recorded four blocks and Stephenson passed out 39 of Wright State's 43 assists.
SET ONE
The closest set of the night, both sides traded points early before the Raiders rolled off a 7-1 run behind two kills each from Alders and Bransfield to gain the advantage. After two quick points from the hosts, Wright State scored five of the next six points behind a pair of kills from Bransfield and Byers to push to a 19-13 advantage. Purdue Fort Wayne's late push never got them closer than two points and the Raiders closed out the set with a kill from Bransfield.
SET TWO
Wright State used an early 7-2 run thanks to Alders, Byers, Martin and
Seiler Hruska to take control and never looked back. Purdue Fort Wayne recorded five of seven points late in the set to pull to within four at 22-18, but the Raiders scored three of the final four points behind a pair of attacking errors from the hosts and a Martin kill to move to the third set.
SET THREE
Back-and-forth early, the Raiders used an 8-3 run behind kills from Alders, Bransfield and Hruska to push out to a 14-9 advantage. Following two quick points from Purdue Fort Wayne, Wright State scored five of the next six points to gain control, later closing the night out with the final three straight points thanks to kills from Bransfield and Hruska.
