Women’s Basketball returns home Saturday against Southern Indiana

DAYTON — The Wright State women's basketball program will host Southern Indiana on Saturday, December 17, at the Nutter Center. The non-conference home finale will start at noon and broadcast live on ESPN+. Live stats will also be available.

LAST TIME OUT
The Raiders fell to 1-8 on the season after a 96-57 loss at Tennessee last Sunday. Wright State held its own against the SEC powerhouse, trailing by only one possession, 30-27, with 5:08 left in the first half. However, the Volunteers ended the period on a 14-6 run and outscored WSU 52-24 in the second half to prevent the upset.
Emily Chapman scored a season-high 18 points on 7-of-10 shooting in the loss, while Isabelle Bolender finished with eight points, two rebounds, and two steals. WSU shot 10-of-21 from deep, good for its second-most 3-pointers in the 2022-23 campaign.
SCOUTING THE SCREAMING EAGLES
Southern Indiana has gone 4-4 overall with a 1-3 mark in road competition in its inaugural season at the NCAA Division I level. The Screaming Eagles opened the year with wins over Oakland City (87-39) and Western Illinois (88-75), followed by four losses in their next five games. USI got back in the win column last Saturday with a 66-60 victory at Eastern Michigan.
USI has three players scoring in double figures, led by junior forward Meredith Raley with 15.4 points per game. Sophomore guard Vanessa Shafford is averaging close to a double-double with 12.9 points and 8.0 rebounds per game. As a team, USI ranks 14th nationally in free throw percentage (78.9%) and 18th in 3-point percentage (38.2%).
HISTORY VS. USI
Saturday will be the first meeting between Wright State and Southern Indiana since 1986, which ended in an 82-81 victory for the Raiders. The all-time series is tied 2-2.
HOT FROM DEEP
Bryce Nixon is shooting 46.5% (20-for-43) from 3-point range, which ranks first in the Horizon League and 37th nationally. The senior guard has knocked down a team-leading 20 threes, averaging 2.2 makes per game. Nixon has scored in double figures in five games, highlighted by a career-best 20 points at Eastern Illinois (11/28).
SHOWING OFF RANGE
The Raiders rank 27th in the country and second in the HL with 8.4 3-pointers per game. Wright State made a season-high 12 treys on 29 attempts at EIU (11/28). Bryce Nixon has knocked down a team-best 20-pointers, while Cedarville transfers Isabelle Bolender and Emily Chapman are tied for second on the team with 12 threes.
SHE'S JUST A FRESHMAN
Makiya Miller posted a team-leading 14 points, a season-high four rebounds, three assists, and one steal in her first collegiate start against Youngstown State (12/4). The freshman went 5-for-8 at the free throw line in the home contest, which was the most makes and attempts by a Raider this season. On the season, Miller is averaging 7.8 points, a team-high 2.3 assists, and 1.7 rebounds over nine games.
OFFENSIVE IMPROVEMENT
Wright State ranks fifth in the Horizon League in field goal percentage (40%). Four Raiders who average 10-plus minutes per game are currently shooting above 44% on the season, led by Taylor Johnson-Matthew's 51.7% field goal clip. In WSU's 98-37 win over Ohio Christian, the Raiders finished 37-of-62 (59.7%) from the floor.
CHAP AT HER BEST
Senior guard Emily Chapman has proven to be an offensive threat in her first year with the Raiders, as she leads the team in 3-point percentage (52.2%) and ranks second in scoring (8.1 ppg). The Proctorville, Ohio native poured in a season-best 18 points on 7-of-10 shooting at Tennessee (12/11), scored 15 points at Eastern Illinois (11/28), and added a 14-point performance against Bowling Green (11/14).
