Bryce Nixon's career-high 24 points were not enough, as the Wright State women's basketball program fell to Southern Indiana 76-66 on Saturday afternoon inside the Nutter Center.
Nixon scored 24 points on 8-of-16 shooting and a 5-of-8 clip from 3-point range. The senior guard was at her best in the fourth quarter with 14 points.
Isabelle Bolender tallied nine points, while
Emily Chapman had an all-around performance with seven points, six rebounds, three assists, and two steals. A pair of freshmen guards in
Makiya Miller and
Lauren Scott also finished with seven points in the non-conference loss.
The Raiders (1-9, 0-2 HL) shot 43 percent (10-of-23) on 3-pointers, accounting for half of their overall field goals. WSU also made a season-high 16 free throws on 21 attempts, highlighted by 11 makes at the charity stripe in the fourth quarter.
Wright State forced the Screaming Eagles (5-4) to 17 turnovers, including eight by way of steal.
Kacee Baumhower and Chapman had two steals apiece to pace the Raiders' defensive efforts.
Southern Indiana found success down low, holding advantages in rebounding (42-29) and points in the paint (38-20). The visitors also shot above 50% in three quarters, finishing 47.3% (26-of-55) from the field.
The game was tied 7-7 following a layup by Cara Vankempen at the 6:54 minute mark of the first half. However, USI led 20-16 after one quarter of action and 36-27 entering halftime.
The momentum stayed in favor of the Screaming Eagles, as Wright State was outscored 21-12 in the third quarter to increase its deficit to 57-39.
Despite trailing 63-41 at the 9:01 minute mark of the fourth quarter, the Raiders cut their deficit to single digits, 69-60, following a 3-pointer by Nixon with 1:39 remaining in the game.
Scott hit a jumper with 1:08 left to reduce Southern Indiana's lead to 70-62. However, WSU failed to trim its deficit any further, resulting in a 76-66 loss.
Wright State outscored USI 27-19 in the fourth quarter, highlighted by four 3-pointers and an 11-of-14 clip from the free throw line.
Wright State will wrap up its non-conference slate at the Hawk Classic hosted by St. Joseph's from December 20-21 in Philadelphia, Pa.
