Women’s Basketball set for Hawk Classic in Philadelphia

DAYTON — The Wright State women's basketball program will close its non-conference schedule at the Hawk Classic in Philadelphia, Pa. The Raiders are set to open the multiple-team event (MTE) against tournament host Saint Joseph's on Tuesday (December 21) before facing Eastern Michigan or James Madison the following day. Both games will start at 1 p.m. and broadcast live on ESPN+ inside the Michael J. Hagan '85 Arena.

SCOUTING THE HAWKS
The Raiders will take on tournament host Saint Joseph's on Tuesday in their opening game at the Hawk Classic. The Hawks have gone 9-1 overall and 6-0 at home this season, which includes a 67-59 win over Vanderbilt. SJU has three players scoring in double figures, led by sophomore forward Talya Brugler with 15.0 points per game on 48.6% shooting. Freshman forward Laura Ziegler is averaging close to a double-double with 10.6 points and a team-high 7.8 rebounds per contest.

Tuesday will mark the first-ever meeting between Wright State and Saint Joseph's.
LAST TIME OUT
Bryce Nixon's career-high 24 points were not enough in Wright State's 76-66 loss against Southern Indiana last Saturday at home. The Raiders trailed 63-41 with 9:01 left in the non-conference game but cut their deficit to single digits, 69-60, following a 3-pointer by Nixon with 1:39 remaining in the game. WSU failed to trim its deficit any further, resulting in its seventh-straight defeat.
Nixon finished 8-of-16 from the field and a 5-of-8 on 3-point attempts. She was at her best in the fourth quarter with 14 points. Isabelle Bolender tallied nine points, while Emily Chapman had an all-around performance with seven points, six rebounds, three assists, and two steals. A pair of freshmen guards in Makiya Miller and Lauren Scott also finished with seven points.
HOT FROM DEEP
Bryce Nixon is shooting 49% (25-for-51) from 3-point range, which ranks first in the Horizon League and 20th nationally. The senior guard has knocked down a team-leading 25 threes, averaging 2.5 makes per game. Nixon has scored in double figures in six games, highlighted by a 20-point performance at Eastern Illinois (11/28) and a career-best 24 points versus Southern Indiana (12/17).
SHOWING OFF RANGE
The Raiders rank 22nd in the country and first in the HL with 8.6 3-pointers per game. Wright State made a season-high 12 treys on 29 attempts at EIU (11/28) and has netted double-figure 3-pointers on four occasions. To date, WSU is the conference's lone school with five-plus 3-pointers in every game this season.
SHE'S JUST A FRESHMAN
Makiya Miller posted a team-leading 14 points, a season-high four rebounds, three assists, and one steal in her first collegiate start against Youngstown State (12/4). The freshman went 5-for-8 at the free throw line in the home contest, which was the most makes and attempts by a Raider this season. On the season, Miller is averaging 7.8 points, a team-high 2.2 assists, and 1.5 rebounds over 10 games.
OFFENSIVE IMPROVEMENT
Wright State ranks fifth in the Horizon League in field goal percentage (39.2%). Four Raiders who average 10-plus minutes per game are currently shooting above 45% on the season, led by Taylor Johnson-Matthew's 50% field goal clip. In WSU's 98-37 win over Ohio Christian, the Raiders finished 37-of-62 (59.7%) from the floor.
CHAP AT HER BEST
Emily Chapman has proven to be a threat in her first year with the Raiders, as she ranks second on the team in 3-point percentage (46.4%) and rebounding (3.6 rpg) and third in scoring (8.0 ppg) and field goal percentage (45.8%). The Proctorville, Ohio native poured in a season-best 18 points on 7-of-10 shooting at Tennessee (12/11), scored 15 points at Eastern Illinois (11/28), and added a 14-point performance against Bowling Green (11/14). The 5-5 senior guard has been WSU's leading rebounder in three games.
NEW-LOOK RAIDERS
This year's women's basketball roster features 12 newcomers, including five upperclassmen transfers and seven freshmen.
