DAYTON — The Wright State women's basketball program forced a season-high 30 turnovers en route to a 69-63 victory over UIC on Saturday afternoon inside the Nutter Center.
Wright State celebrated its "Pink Game" against UIC, with proceeds going to the Maple Tree Cancer Alliance. The Raiders wore pink uniforms in recognition of the event.
WSU (3-19, 2-15 HL) featured a balanced offensive attack with three players scoring in double figures.
Jada Roberson led the Raiders with 15 points to go along with seven rebounds and four assists, while
Destyne Jackson had 13 points and three steals.
Channing Chappell contributed with 11 points and four assists.
Jada Wright continued her impressive play by matching a career high in rebounds (15) in addition to four steals and four blocks.
As a team, Wright State knocked down a season-best 20 free throws on 32 attempts, paced by Roberson with eight trips to the charity stripe. Chappell went 5-of-6 at the free throw line, reaching her career high in attempts.
WSU bested the Flames with a 39-percent (21-of-54) shooting percentage and 37% (7-of-19) clip from 3-point range. UIC shot 36% (23-of-64) overall and 26% (7-of-27) from outside the arc but kept the game in reach by grabbing 18 offensive rebounds. The rebounding advantage played a factor in the Flames finishing the game with 10 more shot attempts than the Raiders' output.
The Raiders scored 19 points off UIC's (2-19, 1-15 HL) 30 turnovers, including 15 by way of steal. WSU had not reached either feat since the 2016-17 season against UIC (1/20/17).
Wright State got off to a strong start, leading 17-7 after the opening quarter. The Flames shot just 3-of-14 (21%) in the period and committed 11 turnovers. Roberson, Jackson, and Webster scored five points apiece in the quarter, while
KK White tallied a team-leading two steals off the bench.
The momentum stayed in favor of the Raiders, as a 7-0 run extended WSU's advantage to 28-10 with 7:34 left in the second quarter. UIC responded with a 12-1 scoring to cut its deficit to 29-22 at the 3:30 minute mark but entered halftime trailing 37-25.
WSU dished out nine assists on 13 field goals in the first half and forced 18 UIC turnovers. Five different Raiders had scored five-plus points in the period, led by
Makira Webster with eight points on 3-of-5 shooting.
The Raiders kept their lead in check by outscoring the Flames 17-16 in the third quarter. UIC had multiple opportunities to inch back but went 2-of-8 at the free throw line. In just six minutes of play in the period, Wright totaled eight rebounds, four points, two steals, and two blocks.
The fourth and final quarter featured a combined 15 turnovers, 16 fouls, and 18 free throw attempts. Despite UIC trailing 62-52 with 1:44 left in the fourth quarter, the visiting team got within one possession, 62-60, with just 59 seconds remaining in the game. However, WSU withheld the late charge to clinch its second home win of the 2021-22 campaign.
Wright State will return to action on Friday, February 18, at Robert Morris for its final regular-season road trip of the season. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. on ESPN+.
