DAYTON — The Wright State baseball program won in walk-off fashion for the second game in a row, as the Raiders took down Xavier 2-1 in 10 innings on Wednesday afternoon at Nischwitz Stadium.Â
The non-conference contest was a pitchers' duel throughout, as WSU (5-9) and Xavier (5-12) entered extra innings with one run apiece on a combined nine hits.Â
After relief pitcher Jay Luikart (2-1) tossed a scoreless 10th inning, the Raiders (5-9) loaded the bases with three walks in the bottom of half of the frame. With two outs, Sass reached home for the game-winning run on a wild pitch thrown by Xavier pitcher Jared Gadd (0-1).Â
Drew Baker led the offense by doubling twice in the first start of his collegiate career. Justin Riemer went 2-for-2 at the plate and added a walk, while Sass compiled a career-high four walks in five at-bats. Alec Sayre walked twice and scored WSU's first run of the game in the first inning.Â
Collectively, Wright State's bullpen pitched 6.2 shutout innings with six strikeouts. Garret Simpson and Tristan Haught tossed two scoreless frames, while Chris Gallagher and Luikart lasted one-plus innings. Starting pitcher Sam Wirsing pitched the first 3.1 innings, allowing one run on two hits and three walks.
The Raiders will return to action on Friday, March 18, for their conference opener against Oakland.Â
