HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. — The Wright State baseball program captured its first series sweep of the season, as the Raiders defeated Northern Kentucky 17-10 on Sunday afternoon at the Bill Aker Baseball Complex.
Zane Harris led WSU (9-12, 4-2 HL) offensively by going 3-for-4 at the plate with a double, a three-run homer, and four runs batted in.
Gehrig Anglin and
Jay Luikart finished with two hits and a two-run roundtrip apiece, while
Julian Greenwell reached base five times on three hits, a walk, and a hit by pitch.
Andrew Patrick batted 1-for-3 with a walk, two RBI, and two runs scored.
The Raiders took advantage of several NKU miscues, reaching base 17 times on free passes, including 13 walks.
Justin McConnell,
Alec Sayre, and Luikart walked multiple times, while Patrick was plunked twice. In Wright State's six-run fifth inning, the Norse (6-15, 1-4 HL) tallied four walks, two hit by pitch, a wild pitch, and an error.
Starting pitcher
Alex Theis (1-0) limited Northern Kentucky to one run on four hits in five innings. The redshirt junior recorded a season-high seven strikeouts compared to two walks. The WSU bullpen struggled by allowing nine runs in the remaining four innings of play.
Sam Wirsing was a bright spot in relief, tossing a scoreless ninth inning.
WSU trailed 1-0 after one inning but scored in the following four frames to build a 12-1 advantage. Harris was responsible for three runs in the third, as he connected on a home run for the second day in a row. Greenwell tallied RBI singles in the fourth and fifth innings.
The Norse did not go away easily, reducing their deficit to 12-7 with a six-spot in the bottom of the sixth. However, Anglin extended the Raider lead to 14-7 in the top half of the seventh by belting a two-run homer, his 10th in just 20 games this season.
Going into the ninth inning ahead 14-8, WSU added three insurance runs thanks to an RBI double off the bat of Harris and a two-run homer by Luikart. NKU made one final push with a pair of runs in the bottom of the ninth, but Wirsing induced the Norse into consecutive flyouts to conclude the Horizon League contest.
Wright State will return to action on Wednesday, March 30, against Miami (OH) at the Joe Nuxhall Classic in Cincinnati.
