CINCINNATI — The Wright State baseball program dropped a slugfest against Miami (OH) in the first round of the Joe Nuxhall Classic, falling 15-12 to the Redhawks on Tuesday afternoon at UC Baseball Stadium.
The Raiders (9-13) built a quick 8-1 lead after plating eight runs in the second inning.
Zane Harris highlighted the scoring burst with a three-run homer and a two-run single, while
Justin Riemer,
Alec Sayre, and
Drew Baker added RBIs in the frame.
However, Miami (9-13) responded with four runs in the bottom of the second and a seven-spot in the fourth to gain a 12-9 advantage. The Redhawks continued to hold the momentum, extending their edge to 15-9 by the end of the sixth inning.
WSU attempted to rally by loading the bases in the seventh but could not turn the opportunity into any runs. The Raiders threatened again in the top of the ninth, as
Jay Luikart hit a leadoff double, followed by Baker and
Justin McConnell reaching base on walks. All three scored thanks to a sac fly by
Julian Greenwell and a two-run single by Sayre. The late comeback was cut short as Redhawk relief pitcher Michael Spinozzi induced a groundout to the next batter, sealing the non-conference loss for WSU.
Harris paced Wright State in the loss by going 2-for-5 at the plate with a homer and a season-high five RBI. Luikart batted 2-for-3 with a double, a triple, and two runs scored, while Riemer reached base four times on an RBI single and three walks. Sayre went 2-for-6 with a double and an RBI to extend his reached-base streak to 14 games.
Starting pitcher
Sam Wirsing allowed five runs, four earned, in 1.2 innings.
Logan Tabeling (0-1) was handed the decision after giving up five runs in one-third of a frame.
Justin Hornschemeier had his best outing of the year as he struck out the side in the eighth.
Chris Gallagher and
Donnie Nicodemus added scoreless appearances in relief.
Miami totaled 17 hits, including a game-high four by Zach MacDonald. Cole Andrews and Stephen Krause tallied four RBIs apiece. The Redhawk bullpen held WSU to five runs on five hits in 7.1 innings.
The Raiders will return to action on Friday, April 1, at Purdue Fort Wayne.
