The Raiders (1-8) trailed 2-0 after three innings but saw their chances of taking the series come to an end, as Virginia Tech (9-1) exploded for eight runs in the fourth and another three in the fifth, resulting in a 13-0 edge for the home squad.
The Hokies tacked on two-run homers in the sixth and eighth innings, while Gehrig Anglin put WSU on the board in the seventh with a solo round trip.Â
Sebastian Gongora (0-1) made his third career start on the mound for WSU, allowing nine runs on nine hits and one walk in 3.2 innings of work. He composed himself with consecutive scoreless frames after allowing a pair of homers in the first inning. However, the redshirt freshman was replaced in the fourth inning after giving up seven runs.Â
Josh Laisure, Brock Nartker, and Riley Perlich each allowed multiple runs in relief. Chris Gallagher shined out of the bullpen, tossing a scoreless seventh inning with two strikeouts.Â
Anglin paced the Raider offense by going 3-for-3 at the plate with two singles and his fourth home run of the season. Alec Sayre went 1-for-3 with a stolen base, while Andrew Patrick and Avery Fisher recorded singles.Â
Virginia Tech starting pitcher Drue Hackenberg (3-0) limited the WSU offense to no runs on four hits in seven innings. Five Hokie batters finished the day with multiple hits and runs batted in.Â
The Raiders will return to action on Tuesday, March 8, for their home opener versus Dayton.
