Raiders victorious in Nashville, Goecke captures another individual win

NASHVILLE – The Wright State golf team needed just four holes on Tuesday to capture its third team title of the spring at the Big Blue Intercollegiate in Nashville. The Raiders have now won six team titles in 10 tournaments across the fall and spring, while Tyler Goecke captured his third individual title of the spring as the only player to finish under par at one-under.

Wright State led after Monday's opening 18 holes before the second round was suspended due to thunderstorms and flooding on the course. After waiting for the rain to pass Tuesday morning and assessing the course conditions, the decision was made to shorten the tournament to two rounds, leaving the Raiders and the majority of the field with a handful of holes remaining.

After a team 292 card in the first round, the Raiders turned in a combined 285 second round score over Monday and Tuesday afternoons to finish nine-over as a group, four shots clear of second-place Tennessee Tech.

Goecke followed up his first round 70 with a 71 in his second 18 holes, finishing at one-under as the only individual under par in the field and three shots clear of teammate Cole Corder and Tennessee Tech's Bracton Womack at two-over. Corder jumped up the leaderboard with his second round 69, the second lowest of the tournament, to finish at that two-over mark and move up seven spots from the first round.

Bryce Haney followed up his Monday round of 74 by carding a 72 in the second round, moving up three spots as he finished in a tie for sixth at four-over, while Davis Root ended the tournament a shot back at five-over following his second round 73 after an opening round 74 Monday. Mikkel Mathiesen rounded out the Raider lineup and put everyone inside the top 20 with his six-over score to finish in a tie for 14th following a pair of 74s on his scorecard.

The Raiders now return home to prepare for the Wright State Invitational this upcoming weekend at Heatherwoode Golf Club. The tournament will begin with a pair of rounds on Sunday, April 17 before the final round on Monday, April 18 to end the regular season slate for the Raiders. The 2022 Horizon League Championship is set for April 24-26 in Florida.
