LOS ANGELES/DAYTON — The Minnesota Twins selected Wright State outfielder
Alec Sayre with the 504th overall pick in the 17th round of Major League Baseball's 2022 Draft on Tuesday afternoon.
Sayre became the first Raider selected in the 2022 MLB Draft. Wright State has had 17 total draftees over the last eight drafts dating back to 2015 and 41 players in program history.
The third-year sophomore enjoyed a breakout 2022 season, as he batted .358 with 18 doubles, one triple, 10 homers, 54 runs batted in, 63 runs scored, and nine stolen bases in 56 starts. Sayre finished the year as the Horizon League leader in batting average, hits (82), doubles, runs, and OPS (1.022). He also possessed top-five HL marks in homers (3rd), RBI (3rd), on-base percentage (3rd, .446), slugging percentage (3rd, .576), and walks (5th, 35).
Sayre collected East-ABCA/Rawlings All-Region accolades for the second year in a row and became the fourth-straight Raider to receive Horizon League Player of the Year honors. The outfielder earned a spot on the Horizon League Championship All-Tournament Team after batting .692 (9-for-13) with two doubles, one home run, seven RBI, and 11 runs in three games.
Sayre has slashed .354/.445/.577 with 27 doubles, three triples, 18 home runs, 97 RBI, and 107 runs in 105 games since joining Wright State in Fall 2019. To date, he ranks seventh in program history in career batting average (.354) and slugging percentage (.577). His 63 runs during the 2022 season were the ninth-most in single-season school history.
