DAYTON – For the second straight contest, the Wright State men's soccer team used some late magic to even up the scoreboard, using a
Brady Shapiro header in the 86th minute Tuesday to grab a 1-1 tie with visiting Duquesne.
Wright State (0-3-3) played from behind most of the afternoon after Duquesne (5-0-1) tallied a goal 13 minutes into the action, but the Raiders had their chances throughout, connecting in the closing moments as they executed one of their four second half corner kicks.
The Raiders used a pair of corner kicks, the first coming in the 85th minute, to put pressure on the visitors late, eventually setting up a second corner a minute later after a shot from
Reece Allbaugh was deflected wide.
Presten Manthey delivered a perfect corner to the head of Shapiro on the short side of the goal, as the ball sailed just past the outstretched arms of Duquesne keeper Domenic Nascimben.
The tying goal set up a frantic final three and a half minutes, as both sides saw a yellow card drawn in the jousting for ball control in a pair of plays near midfield, and Duquesne had an opportunity hit the right post late as well.
Allbaugh led Wright State with three of its 15 shots, while
Nico Likulia,
John Lynam,
Kobe Perlaza and
Cameron Radeke all had a pair of shots as the Raiders collected six shots on frame. Duquesne finished with nine shots of its own, including three each from Mazi Hopfer and Ask Ekeland, but only had two shots find their way on frame, one of which was Torge Witteborg's 13th minute goal.
Chippy throughout, the match featured 21 total fouls and seven yellow cards, including three yellows on the Raiders.
Wright State now travels to Green Bay for a Saturday afternoon matchup before the Raiders return back to Alumni Field to host Northern Kentucky on September 24.
