DAYTON — The Wright State women's basketball program heads to Michigan for a pair of Horizon League games. The Raiders open their road trip at Detroit Mercy on Friday, January 13, at 7 p.m., followed by a 2 p.m. meeting at Oakland on Sunday, January 15. Both matchups will broadcast live on ESPN+. LAST TIME OUT
The Raiders fell 72-61 at home against Milwaukee last Saturday for their 13th consecutive loss. Wright State trailed by single digits for the majority of the second half, cutting its deficit to six points on multiple occasions, including at the 4:11 minute mark of the fourth quarter (61-55) after a 3-point make by
Isabelle Bolender and with 1:23 left in the game (63-57) following two free throws by
Kacee Baumhower. The Panthers held off the late charge by shooting 16-of-18 at the charity stripe in the fourth quarter, highlighted by 11 free throw makes on 12 attempts in the last three minutes of play.
Emily Chapman paced WSU with 14 points on 5-of-10 shooting to go along with four rebounds and four assists. Baumhower poured in 11 points for her fourth consecutive double-figure scoring performance, in addition to a team-best two steals.
SCOUTING THE TITANS
Detroit Mercy is 3-12 overall and 1-5 in the Horizon League under first-year head coach Kate Achter. The Titans are coming off a 64-58 victory versus Robert Morris for their first conference victory of the season. UDM added wins over Canisius (70-65) and Miami Hamilton (91-84) during the non-conference portion of its schedule.
Irene Murua leads the team in scoring (10.5 ppg), rebounding (8.9 rpg), and steals (1.1 spg), while Amaya Burch and Imani McNeal are averaging 8.6 points per game. As a team, Detroit Mercy ranks third in the HL in rebounds per game (39.2) and fourth in blocks per game (2.9) and free throws attempts per game (17.4).
HISTORY VS. UDM
Friday will mark the 63rd career meeting between WSU and UDM. The Raiders lead the all-time series 34-28, which includes 10-straight victories over Detroit. Wright State's first HL victory in the
Kari Hoffman era came against the Titans last season, as the Raiders won 72-56. WSU followed with a 71-67 win over UDM in its final homestand of the year.
SCOUTING THE GOLDEN GRIZZLIES
Oakland is 7-8 overall and 2-4 in the Horizon League under the direction of 10th-year head coach Jeff Tungate. The Golden Grizzlies campaign includes non-conference wins over Akron (74-67), Central Michigan (71-60), and Miami (OH). In HL play, OU has defeated Purdue Fort Wayne (66-64) and Robert Morris (71-59).
The Golden Grizzlies have four players averaging nine-plus points per game, led by junior forward Alexis Johnson with team-high marks in scoring (11.2 ppg) and rebounding (5.1 rpg). As a team, Oakland tops the conference with 14.4 offensive rebounds per game while also ranking third in steals per game (9.4).
HISTORY VS. OAKLAND
The Raiders have controlled the all-time series versus Oakland with 18 wins in 23 meetings. Wright State finished on the losing end in three meetings against Oakland last season, including a 54-45 defeat in the opening round of the Horizon League Championship.
WSU made history in its 80-75 win against OU during the 2017-18 season with school records in free throws makes (33) and free throw attempts (48).
HOT FROM DEEP
Bryce Nixon is shooting 41.4% (36-of-87) from 3-point range, which ranks third in the Horizon League and 55th nationally. The senior guard has knocked down a team-leading 36 threes, averaging 2.25 per game. Nixon leads the team in scoring (11.8 ppg), highlighted by a 20-point performance at Eastern Illinois (11/28) and a career-best 24 points versus Southern Indiana (12/17). She has scored in double figures in a team-best 10 games.
SHOWING OFF RANGE
The Raiders rank 15th in the country and first in the HL with 8.8 3-pointers per game. Wright State made a season-high 13 treys on 32 attempts versus Green Bay (1/6) and has netted double-figure 3-pointers on seven occasions. WSU netted five-plus 3-pointers in its first 13 games of the season before going 4-of-22 from deep at IUPUI (1/1). The Raiders combined for 23 threes on 60 attempts over two games last weekend.
EARLY TESTS
Thirteen of the 16 Division I opponents Wright State has faced this season boast winning records, which include seven programs with five or fewer losses and six teams in the NET top 100. WSU squared off against a pair of teams that reached the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 last season (Ohio State and Tennessee) during the non-conference portion of its schedule in addition to the Mid-American Conference's top-two teams (Toledo and Bowling Green).
CHAP AT HER BEST
Emily Chapman has proven to be a threat in her first year with the Raiders, as she leads the team in 3-point shooting (43.1%), rebounding (3.3 rpg), assists (1.8 apg), and steals (1.0 spg) while ranking second in scoring (8.4 ppg) and shooting percentage (47.6%). The Proctorville, Ohio native poured in a season-best 18 points on 7-of-10 shooting at Tennessee (12/11), scored 15 points at Eastern Illinois (11/28), and added 14-point performances against Bowling Green (11/14) and Milwaukee (1/7). The 5-5 senior guard has been WSU's leading rebounder in four games and tallied a season-high four steals at IUPUI (1/1).
FINDING A GROOVE
Kacee Baumhower has reached double-figure scoring in four consecutive games, highlighted by a career-high 17 points on 5-of-9 shooting and a 5-of-7 clip on free throws at IUPUI (1/1). The sophomore guard is averaging a team-high 11.5 points on 41.4% (24-of-58) shooting in conference-only play. Baumhower leads the team in free throw makes (24) and free throw attempts (39) while also ranking second in rebounding (2.9 rpg) and blocks (0.4 bpg).
FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK
Makiya Miller collected Horizon League Freshman of the Week honors (12/26) after averaging 7.5 points, 2.5 rebounds, and 1.0 steals over two games at the Hawk Classic in Philadelphia, Pa. Through 16 games, Miller leads WSU freshmen in scoring (6.8 ppg), assists per game (1.8), and minutes per game (24.2). She scored in double figures in her opening three games as a Raider, becoming the first freshman player in the last 17 seasons to do so.
TAKE NOTICE
Freshman guard
Lauren Scott shot 71.4% (5-of-7) on 3-pointers over two conference games last weekend. The Worthington, Ohio native scored nine points on a 3-of-4 mark from deep against Green Bay (1/5) and went 2-of-3 on threes versus Milwaukee. On the season, Scott has gone 37.9% (11-of-29) from 3-point range, good for third on the team.
WRIGHT FIT
Bryce Nixon joined Wright State with 317 career points over four collegiate seasons (105 games). The transfer guard has totaled 188 points (11.8 ppg) in just 16 games with the Raiders.
