DAYTON — The Wright State women's basketball program made a season-high 13 shots from beyond the arc but fell to Green Bay 72-51 on Thursday night inside the Nutter Center.
The Raiders (1-14, 0-5 HL) finished 13-of-32 (40.6%) on 3-pointers, just two makes shy of tying a single-game school record in the category. Five individuals netted multiple threes, led by
Kacee Baumhower and
Lauren Scott with three apiece.
Baumhower was the lone Raider to reach double figures, pouring in 11 points on 4-of-8 shooting.
Bryce Nixon and Scott had nine points, while
Emily Chapman and
Cara VanKempen scored eight points in the losing effort.
WSU dished out 14 assists, led by
Isabelle Bolender and Chapman with four each.
Makiya Miller pulled down a team-high four rebounds in addition to two assists.
Wright State forced Green Bay (11-3, 4-1 HL) to 15 turnovers, the third-highest mark given up by the visiting team through 14 games.
Taylor Johnson-Matthews, Chapman, and Nixon recorded two steals to pace the Raiders defensively.
Green Bay shot 50% (28-of-56) overall, leading the charge down low with 36 points in the paint and a 43-17 rebounding advantage. Four of the team's five starters scored in double figures, led by Sydney Lee with 19 points and nine rebounds.
WSU found itself trailing 22-11 after 10 minutes of play, as the Phoenix went 10-of-15 from the field in the opening quarter. The Raiders cut their deficit to 28-24 at the 5:05 minute mark of the second quarter following a 3-pointer by VanKempen. However, Wright State was held scoreless until a buzzer-beating jumper by Bolender and entered halftime down 36-26.
Chapman kept the Raiders within reach with eight first-half points and two steals. Baumhower, Bolender, and VanKempen helped out with five points apiece.
The Raiders were at their best in the third quarter, outscoring Green Bay 19-16. A 3-pointer by Baumhower reduced WSU's deficit to 45-42 at the 2:56 minute mark. The Phoenix responded with a 7-3 run to close the quarter, increasing their advantage to 52-45.
Wright State finished the third quarter 5-of-8 from deep, led by Nixon and Baumhower with a pair of 3-pointers.
The Raiders continued to threaten Green Bay in the fourth quarter, as Scott's third 3-pointer of the game reduced WSU's deficit to 58-51 with 7:36 to go. However, Green Bay halted the late charge with a 14-0 run over the last seven minutes, sealing a 72-51 win.
Wright State will continue its conference schedule on Saturday at 1 p.m. versus Milwaukee.
